Cameron McEvoy’s ”incredible” victory in the men’s 50m freestyle was hailed as the ”swim of the Games” and left a trio of TNT Sports commentators laughing in amazement. McEvoy swam a time of 20.97 to win gold at the 2026 Commonwealth Games ahead of fellow Australians Flynn Southam and Jamie Jack.

Not only was the time a new Commonwealth Games record, but McEvoy finished 0.47 seconds ahead of Southam as he blitzed the sprint race.
”We can hardly believe what we have seen - I thought he was going to take off,” said a stunned James Parrack on commentary for TNT Sports. ”It says Games record but it was so much more than that. Wow, what a swim and what a pleasure.Â
”We don’t get a chance to see someone swimming that fast that often - that is going to be the swim of the Games. We have had great races and world-class times, but that performance has blown us away.”
Fellow commentator Grace Harvey called the performance ”outstanding” while Michael Jamieson was left in awe.
”That was executed perfectly from the very start,” he said. ”That is the fastest swim I have ever had the pleasure of seeing live, that was incredible - a special time.”
For McEvoy, the victory ends his wait for an individual gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, having previously won four silvers, one bronze and three relay golds.
It also means the 32-year-old is the reigning Olympic, world and Commonwealth Games champion in the 50m freestyle, as well as the record holder in the event after swimming 20.88 earlier this year.
”The gold medal is amazing,” he said. ”To go two-oh again [sub-21], no one has done it twice, I’ve been able to do that, so I am very happy.
”It is my first individual medal at the Commonwealth Games. I was silver here 12 years ago with a 22.0, so I am over a second quicker. It has been a long journey, but I got there in the end.”

McEvoy added that his long-term goal is defending his title at Los Angeles 2028.
”There is some low-hanging fruit that I can work on and maybe move the needle a bit more, but the world is also catching up in depth,” he said.
”I cannot cruise into LA 2028, I still have to be locked in all the time.”
