Carlos Alcaraz calls himself ‘unplayable’ after Indian Wells win over Casper Ruud, seeks ‘revenge’ against Cam Norrie

It was a 15th win in a row for Carlos Alcaraz, who continues to make waves in the 2026 season as he eyes a quarter-final clash with Cameron Norrie at Indian Wells. The Spaniard dispatched Casper Ruud in two sets in California to set up a match with the Brit, who is the last player not named Jannik Sinner to defeat the World No. 1. Alcaraz also praised Joao Fonseca, who pushed Sinner close.

Carlos Alcaraz was irresistible as he defeated Casper Ruud at the Indian Wells Open, and could not help but admire his own work.

The world No. 1 was thoroughly entertaining during his 6-1 7-6(2) win under the California sunshine, squashing Ruud's attempt of a comeback in a second-set tie-break, and extending his winning streak to 15.

Arthur Rinderknech forced the Spaniard into a comeback victory in the previous round, and Alcaraz knew he needed to be authoritative against Ruud.

He did so with plenty of style, fearlessly lobbing Ruud twice early before he began to command the court.

"My first set was unplayable, to be honest," Alcaraz proudly expressed.

"I’m just really happy about playing that kind of level. I’m really happy to get through and hopefully [I can] play at this level in the next round."

His seemingly endless bag of tricks had Ruud on the ropes and a win never looked in doubt. His victory over the Norwegian marks a fifth Indian Wells quarter-final, a rather impressive feat at just 23.

And at such a young age, he seems to be finding the sort of maturity that players only tend to discover in the latter half of their career.

"I think I can have fun and enjoy, but I can also turn my mind and focus again," he said. "I try to play my best tennis on every point, but when a point deserves a smile, I gotta do that.

"That’s what happened today. Casper played some great points, and I had to enjoy that. That’s why we both play tennis."

Alcaraz will now gear up to take on 2021 champion Cameron Norrie, who dumped Alcaraz out of the Paris Masters towards the end of 2025.

Brit Norrie is the most recent player other than Jannik Sinner to defeat Alcaraz, and reached the quarter-final after defeating Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata 6-4 6-2.

"I just really want to take the revenge," Alcaraz said. "Really difficult one against Cam, I have great battles against him. Lefties are always tricky to play against.

"The way he can change the height of the ball, he has a really flat backhand and [heavy] top-spin forehand. You can be a little bit confused sometimes with how the ball is going to come to you.

"He's a gladiator. He's a real fighter, fighting for every ball, every game, every set."

Alcaraz also praised rising star Joao Fonseca, who pushed world No. 2 Sinner close in two sets in California, in what could be the start of a budding rivalry between the Brazilian and Italian.

Fonseca forced Sinner into two tie-breaks in a thrilling showdown, with the latter emerging victorious to book his quarter-final spot.

Alcaraz was asked about the 19-year-old and was full of praise for him despite the defeat.

"Obviously when someone is going toe to toe with Jannik, that means he had to play great tennis and perform really, really well," Alcaraz added.

"I couldn't see the full match, but I saw that Joao is playing great tennis. I’m really happy to see Joao playing these kinds of matches, at this kind of level."

Alcaraz has yet to face Fonseca but, like himself and Sinner, the Brazilian is a former champion at the Next Gen ATP Finals, winning in 2024.

"I'm a player and a person who loves seeing the player growing. As a person, as a player, he's really young, and for sure he's going to learn from this experience," Alcaraz said of Fonseca.

"I’m just really happy to see where Joao is right now and, for sure, we're going to see more of Joao in the future."
