ALEXANDER ZVEREV'S FIRST WORDS AS A GRAND SLAM CHAMPION
Zverev congratulates Flavio Cobolli on a great two weeks and says ‘from the bottom of his heart’ he hopes he will hold one of these (Grand Slam winner’s) trophies in the future.
The world number three talks about the importance of this court as he says he’s had the best and worst moments on it with the injury in 2022 and the runner-up finish in 2024 before ‘finally a happy ending’ with victory today.
The German also pays tribute to his family, his friends, his team and the crowd.

The Italian says it’s not easy to talk right now, but pays tribute to Zverev and says he is happy for him but also sad for himself. He claims he was close (to winning) and he feels it.
He jokes that now Sascha has achieved his dream he should let him win next time and claims that if anyone asks who he thinks deserves to win a Grand Slam title, it’s Zverev.
The 10th seed thanks the 'Blue Wall' of Italian fans and they respond by singing his name.
Cobolli suggests it's just the start for him (in his quest for tennis glory) and then calls for the crowd to make some noise for Zverev.

It is the 25th and biggest tour-level title of his career and sees him become the first German men’s singles champion at this tournament in the Open Era.

The German is relieved to see Flavio’s next return hit the tape and drop just wide and it frees him up to cannon down another big first serve to make Pulp (30-30).
The rollercoaster continues as the second seed surprisingly blinks first in the ensuing backhand-to-backhand exchange, but he fends off the break point with a superb backhand pass down the line from a drop-shot pick-up.
Flavio just can’t take advantage of his opponent’s stress and the world number three belatedly consolidates with a clutch serve following a raking backhand down the line.

The German resists in another lung-bursting rally and lures a backhand long to tease a third opportunity out of his opponent and this time he gets his reward when the Italian flashes an inside-out forehand long.

Flavio pockets an instant mini break as he seizes upon a weighty drop volley and drives a backhand crosscourt pass beyond the German.
The Italian hands it straight back with an inside-out forehand into the net and then sees his forehand pass from a drop volley clip the tape and fly long.
Zverev’s picks off the re-drop from his dropper to lead 3-1 but the 10th seed unleashes a stonking inside-out forehand to bite back and then hammers down a clutch serve to level at the change of ends.

Indeed, the focus on his physical issue, that may well be diabetes-related, has freed him from the thought of the prize on the line.
The world number three races into a 40-0 lead and glosses over a woeful smash into the net to hold to 30 with an ace down the T.

On TNT Sports comms, Jim Courier says the second seed appears to have discomfort in his legs and suggests it will be stress cramps given the magnitude of this contest rather than actual tiredness.
Meanwhile, Cobolli manages to resuscitate the game before Zverev thunders an inside-in winner to earn break point.
The German is forced to play more aggressively and it works in his favour as he blasts a wonderful backhand winner down the line to break back!

Sascha drills another backhand wide to alleviate the pressure on his opponent and this time Flavio consolidates with a lovely, angled volley off set up by a blistering backhand down the line.
