QUEEN OF CLAY IGA SWIATEK SETS SEMI-FINAL CLASH WITH TOP SEED ARYNA SABALENKA
Four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek stretched her winning streak at Roland-Garros to 26 matches with a straight-sets victory over Elina Svitolina.
The Pole remains on course to lift the trophy for what would be a record fourth year in a row with a 6-1 7-5 success in one hour and 41 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Svitolina engaged the fifth seed in a number of gruelling tussles around deuce in the opener but continually came up short as Swiatek played the key points that bit better.
The Ukrainian then let a 3-1 lead in the second slip with Swiatek breaking with a rasping return down the line in game 11 before serving out to 15 with the aid of a trio of aces.
Swiatek will now face top seed Arnya Sabalenka in the last four in what will be a major test of her bid to win a fifth French Open title in six years.

Swiatek is trusting the backhand more at the moment and pummels one down the line to take charge before a timely ace moves her 30-0 to the good.
It’s now or never time for Elina and she adds extra zip to her groundstrokes to force a backhand long.
Iga responds with an ace to tee up two match points and another supreme serve seals the victory on the first of them.

That could be a HUGELY significant.
Svitolina over-presses with a forehand to trail 15-30 on serve and is under the cosh in the following point.
Swiatek blasts a wayward forehand long but does notch one break point with an emphatic smash at the net.
The Pole takes full advantage as she jumps all over a second serve to arrow a return down the line and make the breakthrough.
Iga will now serve for the match.

Svitolina sinks to her haunches after blasting a forehand off a short ball just long.
It was a real chance to pile on the pressure, but she follows with a wild backhand return that gives Iga some breathing space.
The four-time champion can’t find her first serve but gets fortunate when Elina buries a very make-able forehand into the net.
It’s not too convincing from the fifth seed and a double fault increases the heat before the Ukrainian again gets a chance to step in and thunder away a forehand to make deuce.
The tension is palpable but Elina again drops to her haunches and yelps in dismay when she drags a venomous return into the net before another one flies long to let a relieved Swiatek off the hook.

Svitolina produces close to her full repertoire to dart through a dominant clean hold.
The 13th seed shows wonderful touch to kill a half volley from a tricky forecourt position and then back pedals neatly to slap away an overhead.
Some delightful craft with the low slice lures a forehand into the net from Iga on the next point and the Ukrainian finishes it all off with a fizzing first serve.

What a game for lovers of great shot-making!
Swiatek delivers delicious angle on a crosscourt forehand and then nails a 10th winner off the backhand side from a tough, neutral position.
The Pole tees up game points with a sizzling forehand down the line but then Svitolina enjoys some of the spotlight with a pair of crushing forehand winners of her own.
A brilliant rally ensues with the only disappointment being that it all ends on a miss as Elina arrows a backhand attempt down the line into the net.

Svitolina turns on the after-burners from 15-30 after Swiatek had pounced upon a poor drop shot to execute a clinical backhand crosscourt winner.
The Ukrainian bullets away a crisp forehand winner and then finds some devilish width to tee up a backhand down the line.
It’s clutch tennis from the 13th seed who then completes the recovery when Iga flashes a loose forehand long.

Elina gets off to a dreadful start trying to consolidate with a double fault giving Iga real hope at 0-30.
The Ukrainian resets with a stunning forehand winner down the line on her way to 30-30, but Swiatek retorts with a loopy forehand that tees up the winner for the break point.
The Pole takes charge of the ensuing rally and resists the urge to go for a big winner, eventually dragging Elina into her right corner and forcing a rushed forehand down the line into the trams!

Swiatek hesitates attacking a drive volley at 30-30 and butchers it into the net.
This time Svitolina remains patient.
A crafty crosscourt slice lures Iga forward and the Pole blinks with a jabbed, low backhand into the net.

Swiatek struggles to control her range and depth of shot with the wind picking up behind her.
It’s no fun for Elina either as she removes grit from the spray of clay from the gusts out of her eyes.
The 13th seed handles the rough conditions that bit better on this occasion though, and posts a most-welcome, clean hold.

Svitolina’s anguished expressions says it all as she slides into an error behind her baseline and looks to the sky.
The Ukrainian had a window of opportunity at 30-30 following a double fault from the Pole, but she can’t scrap to deuce as Iga powers into the forecourt to drill an attempt down the line, forcing another mistake to get on the board.

Svitolina starts and ends a hold from deuce with some excellent first serves.
Iga complicated it for the Ukrainian in the middle with winners off the forehand and backhand to turn the screw from 40-15 down, but the 13th seed reset and got the job done to kick off Set 2 on a positive note.

Swiatek demonstrates the fragility that has seen her invincible status as the Queen of Clay questioned in 2025, as the trump card that is her high-bounce, Nadal-esque forehand leaks a pair of awful unforced errors to complicate what looked like being a routine game.
Svitolina looks to push hard for the break back from 30-30 but over presses and drills another forehand long.
Swiatek blows game point with a loose backhand and then another forehand sails beyond the baseline to tee up break point.
The three-time defending champion fends it off as she again passes Elina at the net but a FIFTH unforced error off the forehand in this game alone buries into the net and gifts the 13th seed another opportunity.
Svitolina is frustrated once more as she is too eager blasting another return off the island and it’s a real war of attrition as deuces come and go until the Ukrainian pummels a forehand low into the net to allow her opponent to consolidate via a long and winding road.
