Aryna Sabalenka breaks at the death to secure a straight-sets win over Daria Kasatkina.
The world number one stormed through a one-sided opener but had to grit out the second as a sea of errors coupled with improvement from her opponent made life difficult.
The Belarusian stepped on the gas on the return in the 12th game of the second stanza and a searing backhand clocked up triple match point.
The Aussie buckled on the second with a backhand error to allow the top seed to prevail in one hour and 16 minutes.
Sabalenka will now meet Naomi Osaka in a blockbuster round of 16 clash.
