Diana Shnaider reaches her first ever Grand Slam quarter-final with three-set win over Madison Keys at the 2026 French Open

Diana Shnaider is into her first Grand Slam quarter-final!

The Russian claimed her maiden victory over Madison Keys at the fourth time of asking as she broke on her first match point to secure a third-set bagel and prevail in one hour and 43 minutes.

The 25th seed will now face play Aryna Sabalenka or Naomi Osaka in the last eight.

Shnaider is racing towards the finish line now.

The Russian drops the opening points but reels off four in a row, surging forward to pick off a net cord with a forehand pass down the line.

Keys needs to rally hard after opening with a double fault, but her forehand lands some heavy blows to move her 40-30 up.

However, a 12th unforced error of this decider flies well wide and she then contrives to cough up break point with a woeful smash into the net at point-blank range and a shocker of a forehand way long.

The Keys forehand misfires quite badly and it sees Diana romp through to consolidate with a hold to love.

Diana gets the reward for some stubborn defence as Keys unloads on a spectacular backhand but fires well wide of the island to offer up two break points.

The Russian slices long under pressure on the first but Maddy double faults on the second and the American will need to play catch-up to keep her last eight hopes alive.

Shnaider gives herself plenty to do at 15-40 down but a lovely stun volley keeps her in the hunt before Maddy fluffs her lines with an inside-out forehand that flies wide.

‘Come on!’ yells the Russian as she nails a forehand winner up the line and her belief reignites as Keys misfires into the net to let the 25th seed off the hook.

The former Australian Open champion pops away a sharp volley to serve out to 15 on her second set point after a much-improved showing in the second stanza.

Diana drills a tame forehand into the net at 15-15 and then coughs up a couple of break points when she struggles with the looping return and jabs a backhand into the net.

The Russian can’t resist and fires a forehand long to surrender her serve with a bit of a whimper.

Keys unleashes a stonking forehand winner down the line to assume command of the situation at 15-15.

The 19th seed drags Diane way off court to her right to tee up a forehand to the open court and then seals the game to 15 with an ace.

Shnaider counter punches her way forward but is a bit of a sitting duck off a high bouncing volley until she shows terrific anticipating to pick off Maddy’s rasping pass with a top-drawer block volley.

It deflates the American who offers little resistance from there as Diana levels thanks to a solid love hold.

Maddy scorches a wonderful crosscourt winner as the pick of her points en route to a rapid love hold.

Shnaider fizzes a forehand just long but as the game progresses it’s Keys who can’t find the island as she’s pushed into uncomfortable positions wide of her tramlines.

The American continues to look agitated when she leaks a loose backhand wide and Diana ends up holding all-too-easily.

There are signs that Keys is finding some semblance of rhythm after such an up and down opener.

A powerhouse crosscourt backhand helps her to venture forward and execute a delicious half volley that Shnaider can only desperately lob long to conclude a hold to 15.

Shnaider slams an ace down the T to take control but allows a 30-0 lead to disappear with two shaky forehands leading to a break point for her opponent.

The Russian drills a midcourt winner off that flank to make deuce but a loose backhand coughs up a second BP.

The 25th seed leans on her serve to survive it and Keys skews a poor backhand wide before dumping a routine volley into the net to allow Diana to snatch what appeared to be an unlikely hold.

Keys opens Set 2 with a hold to 15 as she looks to hit the comeback trail and avoid a first ever loss to the Russian.

Maddy just hasn’t been consistent enough so far and her tepid forehand fires low into the net to allow the Russian to move within a game of taking the opening set.

Shnaider licks the back edge of the baseline with a backhand pick-up off a dropper to make deuce from 40-0 down.

Keys looks visibly frustrated at how close it was but is relieved seconds later when the Russian blasts a mid-court forehand wide.

The American doesn't make the most of the let-off and double faults to keep the door open before misfiring on a couple of forehands to surrender her serve again.

Keys struggles to find the island on the return and it makes life easy for Shnaider to race through a clean game.
