The US Open will have a new standalone mixed doubles event before the main tournament in August, and a number of star names are set to play in it. Britain's Emma Raducanu and French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz are one of the pairs entered. Superstars Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner are also set to play in the event being played a few days before the start of the final Grand Slam of the year.

British No. 1 Emma Raducanu and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz will team up for the new-look US Open mixed doubles event in August, hoping to secure the $1 million prize on offer.

There are a number of high-profile players entered for the event on August 19-20, which is being held before the main tournament beginning at Flushing Meadows on August 24.

Raducanu won the women's singles title at the US Open in 2021, while Alcaraz recently claimed his fifth Grand Slam at the French Open.

"She’s going to be the boss," Alcaraz said at a press conference following his first-round victory over Adam Walton at Queen's. "The US Open came to us and gave us the opportunity to play mixed doubles and I’m super excited about it. It’s going to be great.

"I’ve known Emma a really long time and I have a really good relationship with her, it’s going to be interesting. The tournament told us about the mixed tournament, and I was thinking it couldn’t be better than Emma.

"I asked Emma if she wanted to play doubles with me and yeah, I made that special request."

Former US Open winner Naomi Osaka will team up with Nick Kyrgios, while Britain's Jack Draper will play alongside Chinese world No. 4 Zheng Qinwen.

Superstars Novak Djokovic - due to play with compatriot Olga Danilovic - and Jannik Sinner, paired with American Emma Navarro, are also on the list, with this new schedule effectively seeing the tournament become a three-week event.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will partner Grigor Dimitrov, while five-time major winner Iga Swiatek will play alongside Casper Ruud.

United States Tennis Association CEO and executive director Lew Sherr said: "Seeing the teams that have already put their names on the entry list makes us all incredibly excited.

"It shows that the players are behind what we are trying to do, and we know that the fans will love it."

Holger Rune and Coco Gauff are the only players ranked inside the men's and women's top 10 to have not yet expressed interest in the new-look tournament.

Eight of the 16 teams will qualify automatically based on their combined singles ranking as of July 28, when the entry window closes. The remaining eight teams will be determined via wild card, and "announced on a date to follow," according to the organisers.

There was some criticism of the move to a new format earlier this year.

Italian pair Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, winners of last year's US Open mixed doubles title, initially described the decision as a "profound injustice". But they are on the entry list for the event.

A few days after the mixed doubles, the US Open will take place from August 24-September 7, the final Grand Slam of the tennis year.

Before that comes the annual spectacular at Wimbledon, which begins on June 30 and runs until July 13.
