Iga Swiatek shrugs off 'some mistakes' in beating Suzan Lamens in three sets to reach third round of US Open

Iga Swiatek has reached the third round of the US Open after defeating Dutch underdog Suzan Lamens. The world No. 2 admitted she "made some mistakes" as Lamens fought back to claim the second set in New York. Swiatek, a former champion of the tournament in 2022 and this year's Wimbledon winner, held her nerve in the decider to ultimately win 6–1 4–6 6–4.

World No. 2 Iga Swiatek is into the third round of the US Open after overcoming "some mistakes" in a three-set win over Suzan Lamens in New York.

The former champion admitted she "made some mistakes" at Flushing Meadows, after appearing on course for a dominant victory when taking the opening set in fluent fashion.

She was met with a vigorous response in the second set from her Dutch opponent, who was not prepared to go down without a fight.

Lamens, ranked 66th in the world, massively upped her game as Swiatek began to falter.

This year’s Wimbledon champion was visibly agitated as Lamens more than held her own to force a third set.

Swiatek, although far from her best at Arthur Ashe Stadium, showed her experience in the decider to ultimately win 6-1 4-6 6–4.

Speaking on court just moments after it finished, she said: "It wasn’t an easy match and I made some mistakes.

"I’m happy that at the end I could be more proactive.

"I served better [in the third] than in the previous sets. I wanted to be pretty confident with my serve and go for it. I’m happy that I closed it pretty fast, even though I lost one break.

"I felt like it depended on me and whether I was going to make mistakes or not. Sometimes I did, I probably got a little tight in the second set and she used the opportunity and was using her chances.

"It was not easy, but the third set is a reset. You’ve got to start from the beginning and I knew I could play a little more precisely, so I just tried to do that."

According to Opta, Swiatek is the fourth player in the Open Era to reach the third round in 23+ consecutive women’s singles Grand Slam events after Martina Navratilova, Conchita Martinez and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.

Having cruised to victory over Colombia’s Emiliana Arango in the opening round off the back of her Cincinnati Open triumph earlier this month, the Lamens test was the first three-set match Swiatek had played since Wimbledon.

Despite the added physical and mental strain of a longer encounter, she explained the benefits of spending more time on the court.

Swiatek said: "Just being under pressure a bit, figuring it out, problem-solving, it's always something you can take from a match like that.

"Just maybe playing a bit longer on Ashe also, because the surface, as usual, practice courts are totally different. Yeah, I'll focus on that."

It is three years since Swiatek won the US Open, defeating Ons Jabeur in the 2022 final.

The Pole will face 29th seed Anna Kalinskaya next, after she made the third round with a 6–1 7–5 win over Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan.

"For sure it's gonna be hard," Swiatek added.

"She likes faster surfaces. I haven't watched her here obviously because there's so much going on, but I'll prepare tactically as before any other match and I'll be ready.

"She's a fat hitter and she likes to be proactive and be aggressive from the beginning from the first ball."
