Alexander Zverev ends British wildcard Arthur Fery’s fairytale run with an emphatic three-set win to reach his first SW19 final at Wimbledon 2026

Alexander Zverev made it back-to-back Grand Slam finals as he ended the fairytale run of British wildcard Arthur Fery.

The recent French Open champion was a class above as he reached the final Sunday in SW19 for the first time thanks to a 7-6 6-2 6-4 success.

There was an air of expectation inside Centre Court as the home support saw Fery break back from 3-1 down to force a first-set tie-break.

The 23-year-old underdog came up way short, however, as some cheap unforced errors allowed Zverev to romp through it 7-0 and claim the opener in 54 minutes.

World number 114, Fery was hoping to keep alive his dreams of emulating Goran Ivanisevic (2001) as the only previous wildcard to lift the title, but reality began to sink in as Zverev won five games in a row on his way to surging into a two-set lead.

The pattern continued in the third with the recent Roland-Garros winner utterly dominant at times as he broke for a 3-2 lead before serving out to 15 to tee up a clash with Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner in the final on Sunday.

Zverev has won a tiebreak to love for the fifth time in his career at a Grand Slam event – it is also Zverev’s second tiebreak to love at Wimbledon this year, after the opening round against Alexander Blockx.

Zverev (29 years 70 days at tournament start) is now the oldest player in the Open Era to reach the Men’s Singles final at all four Grand Slam events, surpassing Andy Murray (29 years 8 days).

Zverev gives the Centre Court crowd hope with a plus-one forehand long, but there are groans of dismay when Fery hooks a strained backhand off the island.

The German gets back to business with a clinical 1-2 forehand punch and pops away a simple volley to chalk up two match points.

The second seed only needs one as he moves into his first Wimbledon final and ends the stunning run of the British underdog.

Since then he has scrapped hard and finds some much-valued aces to pose the serve-out question with a hold to love.

The German appears to have so much time as he dictates and booms away a tremendous forehand before a counter-punched backhand lures a block volley long to tee up triple break point.

Sascha saves the best until last as he tip-toes into his left-hand corner and despatches a special inside-out forehand winner to break to love.

A muted groan reverberates around Centre Court in unison as Arthur fails to find a return at 0-15 and Zverev powers through from there to quickly tie the set.

The crowd try to get behind their man but Zverev presses to deuce with wonderful anticipation to block away a rocket of a pass.

The wildcard fluffs another game point with a double fault but finally hauls himself through a gritty hold with a sublime crosscourt backhand.
