Jannik Sinner retains the title to claim a fifth Grand Slam courtesy of a four-set victory over Alexander Zverev on Centre Court at Wimbledon 2026

Jannik Sinner retained the Wimbledon title with a hard-fought four-set victory over Alexander Zverev.

The world No. 1 claimed his fifth Grand Slam courtesy of a 6-7(7) 7-6(2) 6-3 6-4 success in three hours and 46 minutes on Centre Court.

It was the Italian’s 10th straight victory over the German world No. 3 as he emphatically underlined his current dominance over the rest of the ATP Tour.

Asked how it felt to retain the SW19 crown, the 24-year-old Sinner succinctly declared: ”Amazing."

”There’s no better place to play tennis,” he added.

There was little between the top two seeds in what proved to be an extremely tight one-hour and five-minute opener.

Sinner had a break point in the seventh game but could not convert and it was Zverev who got his reward for some aggressive proactive tennis off his forehand to take what proved to be an inevitable tie-break 9-7 on his second set point.

The second stanza followed a similar pattern but this time Sinner moved through the gears to claim the tie-break 7-2 and level the match.

The serve-dominated procession continued until Sinner was forced to fend off a first break point with a sumptuous drop shot in game seven of the third. It proved pivotal as the Italian broke straight after and then served out to love to move within a set of a second Wimbledon crown.

Zverev showed signs of recovery early in the fourth set, but it was Sinner who struck again as he broke for a 4-3 lead courtesy of a forehand thunderbolt.

The 24-year-old then served out to 30 with a rocket forehand on his first match point to close-out a thrilling finale in style.

”Congratulations to Jannik, he showed once again why he's the best player in the world," said a disappointed Zverev at the trophy presentation.

"It was great to share the Centre Court with you on the final weekend of Wimbledon. It’s an honour to be here, unfortunately it didn’t go my way, but congrats to you [Sinner] first of all."

Since the ATP Rankings were introduced in 1973, only Roger Federer (five) has won more Men's Grand Slam singles titles than Jannik Sinner (four, now level with Rafael Nadal) after their first eight major appearances as world No. 1.

Sinner has claimed five Grand Slam singles titles, matching the combined total of all other Italian players in tennis history (two for Nicola Pietrangeli and one each for Adriano Panatta, Francesco Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta).

Sinner is the second player in the Open Era to claim the Men’s singles title in Wimbledon after having won his opening match at the event in a five-setter after Bjorn Borg in 1978.

Sinner is the fourth player since the ATP Rankings were published in 1973 to win the Men’s singles title in Wimbledon as world No. 1 for consecutive editions after Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

Zverev goes too big on a forehand long to open but tracks down a weak dropper to caress a simple winner down the line.

Sinner again goes to the drop shot and is undone by a rocket attempt up the line despite his diving attempt to rescue it at the net.

The world No.1 zaps a forehand down the line to make Pulp (30-30) and earns match point with an acute-angled re-drop following one of the rallies of the final.

The top seed then seals the deal with a rocket forehand down the line.

Zverev poses the serve-out question with a hold to 30 to give himself one last chance to hit back and keep his slim title hopes alive.

Sinner takes care of business to consolidate via the love hold and he is one game away from a fifth Grand Slam title.

Sinner produces more astonishing defence beyond his baseline, showcasing Djokovic-esque elasticity and conjures up a lob-volley winner to get the crowd roaring in delight.

Zverev is hugely frustrated when he dumps a forehand into the net off a rallying ball and then coughs up two break points when his opponent finds great depth off a return.

The second seed responds with a clutch serve and remains calm at the net to thwack away a volley and make deuce.

Sinner comes again and it’s Sascha who blinks first in the rally to offer up another chance with a wayward forehand.

The world No.1 makes sure of it this time with an inside-in forehand winner and suddenly he is tantalisingly close to retaining his title.

Sinner floats a quite sublime dropper over the net that Zverev doesn’t even move for.

The Italian then seals a hold to 15 with his 15th ace of the day to continue his bid to get this won in four.

The third set looks like a real anomaly here.

The serving procession continues as Zverev puts the frustration of a near miss with a backhand pass down the line to slam the door shut on a hold to 30 courtesy of a clutch wide serve.

There’s definitely a second wind from Zverev now as he attacks on the return and pushes to 0-30 again with a clinical overhead.

Sinner retorts with a barrage of crosscourt forehands before thudding away a backhand winner to the opposite corner.

The defending champion cannons down a trio of hefty serves from there and extinguishes the danger.

Zverev has certainly found his Mojo on that first serve again.

The Roland-Garros winner uses that first delivery to do all of the heavy-lifting in a rapid love hold that defies any suggestions he may fall away from here.

Sinner cruises into a 40-0 lead but needs to re-focus sharply when Zverev suddenly rekindles some form on the return to surge to deuce.

The Italian does just enough with a crosscourt backhand to regain the ascendancy and Sascha hooks a return off that same wing into the net to miss out on the half chance.

Zverev hangs tight with a hold to 15 as he looks to retain his belief after such a major disappointment at the end of the second.

The German zaps down a huge serve but double faults and then fires long to cough up just the second BP against his serve in the match.

Sinner slips but stays alive in the ensuing rally and a huge strike down the line forces the error long and leaves Sascha hurling his racquet to the floor.

Sinner has been pressing for the majority of this set, but he wobbles early here and a double fault contributes to him needing to turn on the after-burners from 0-30.

The four-time Major winner sweeps a wrong-footing plus-one drive volley to get back on track before the first serve ignites to put him 40-30 up.

Zverev responds with a 101mph inside-in forehand down the line and earns break point when Sinner has a brain-freeze on a plus-one and ends up dumping a tame backhand into the net.

The Italian deploys a dropper to flummox Zverev, who slips and clutches at his knee.

Sinner races over to check on him and helps the German to his feet in a great show of sportsmanship.

The defending champion survives from there as he tracks down a drop shot and does enough with the cross-court forehand.
