Alexander Zverev cruises into the round of 16 at Wimbledon 2026 with a straight-sets win over Marcos Giron on No.1 Court

Alexander Zverev proved too strong for Marcos Giron as the reigning Roland-Garros champion reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon for just the fourth time.

The second seed did most of the heavy-lifting with his powerhouse serve as he notched a 6-2 7-6 6-4 victory on No.1 Court.

The German raced through the opener as he broke twice on his way to serving it out in 36 minutes.

Giron improved markedly in the second, holding with relative ease and posing more questions on the second seed’s serve. However, it was Zverev who came out on top by a 7-4 scoreline in the breaker to take a stranglehold on the match.

The American world number 92 looked dejected as he coughed up his serve early in the third, but he battled back to level at 4-4 and threaten a plot twist.

However, what proved to be a lengthy final game went the way of Zverev as he broke on a first match point to set up a fourth-round clash with Jiri Lehecka or Jaume Munar.

Zverev looks to ends this here and unleashes a ferocious forehand winner before a backhand down the line leaves Giron staring down the barrel at 0-30.

The American takes some pace off a clever serve to resuscitate his serve and goes on to earn game point with a lovely crosscourt backhand volley.

Marcos double faults to give Sascha another look-in at deuce where a lengthy face-off ensues.

Zverev earns match point when Giron drills a make-able forehand into the net and then fires off the island to allow the second seed to get the job done in straight sets.

Zverev has to do it the hard way and is far from his best now but he digs out the hold from deuce to halt some of his opponent’s momentum and turn up the heat on the scoreboard.

Giron must now hold to stay in the tournament.

Zverev looks to get back on track as he resists in a lung-busting rally and throws in a sumptuous, short slice to press at 15-30.

A similar rally ensues in the next point and Giron blinks with a forehand into the net.

The world number 92 zaps away a crosscourt forehand winner to erase the first and pounces upon a poor dropper to sizzle a crosscourt pass that is too hot for the second seed to handle.

Zverev comes again with a deep return that forces the error long to earn a third chance but Marcos hammers blistering backhand down the line to stave it off.

The American survives from there to consolidate via a long and winding road and this third set is anyone’s right in its business end.

Zverev butchers a one-two forehand punch into the net at 30-0 up and pretty much implodes to cough up break back point out of nowhere.

There's no recovery either, as the German fluffs a backhand to surrender his serve and ignite the American's belief.

Giron pockets some poor miscues from the German to stay in contention with a rapid love hold.

A 16th ace of the contest and a lovely, short-angled backhand winner help Zverev to keep pushing the board towards what he hopes will be a chequered flag that isn't too far away on his horizon.

Can Giron provide a plot twist?

The American will have to make a move soon if he's going to prolong his latest Wimbledon adventure.

Zverev strikes early in the third as he follows up a hold to 30 by cranking up the heat from 40-15 down.

Giron double faults at deuce to hand over a break point and the German delivers as an injection of pace on his crosscourt backhand forces the error in response into the net.

The German is too solid as the big serve does plenty of damage and Giron leaks some cheap errors to allow the French Open champion to take the breaker by a 7-4 scoreline.

Zverev has the edge at the change of ends as he earns the mini break courtesy of a huge slice of fortune off a net cord winner.

It’s full-speed ahead ot the breaker as Sascha throws down the hammer of a first serve to reel off four points in a row from 0-15 down.

Giron guarantees himself the minimum of a breaker with a pair of clutch first serves after a stray forehand into the alley had given Zverev a glimmer of hope at Pulp.

Zverev lands three more aces to take his total to 12 and breeze level with a game to 15.
