Iga Swiatek routed in Doha by Jelena Ostapenko - who has incredible 5-0 record against world No. 2

Iga Swiatek’s defense of her Qatar Open title came to a shuddering end against former Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko, with the Latvian winning their semi-final 6-3 6-1 to improve their head-to-head to a staggering 5-0. Ostapenko has Swiatek’s number it seems, with the world No. 2 falling to her heaviest defeat in nearly two years as she was powerless to find any way past her opponent.

Iga Swiatek lost to Jelena Ostapenko in the Qatar Open semi-finals to end her winning run at the WTA 1000 tournament.

The Pole had won in Doha for the past three seasons, losing just one set across those triumphs.

But that incredible run came to an end in emphatic fashion, as she was well beaten by a player who is fast becoming a thorn in her side.

Former French Open champion Ostapenko has always troubled Swiatek, and now boasts a 5-0 head-to-head record against the world No. 2 - by far the best of anyone on the tour.

Indeed, she is the only active player with a winning head-to-head with Swiatek, and the only retired player who can even come close is former world No. 1 Ash Barty, who led Swiatek 2-0 when she called time on her career.

"I was pretty confident that I obviously would beat her, because we've played a lot of matches and I know how to play against her," Ostapenko said in her on-court interview after a tempestuous match that saw Swiatek lose her temper and smash her racquet.

"I was more focusing on myself and what I had to do. I'm happy with the way I'm handling my emotions this week.

"Obviously I was preparing for the match, and I pretty much knew what to expect from her," Ostapenko continued.

"I don't know, sometimes I know where the ball's coming, but sometimes I'm just going with my feelings and my instincts, so that helps me."

Ostapenko’s style of play can cause problems for anyone, with the Latvian notorious for going for winners from anywhere on the court - and in Doha, she landed more than she missed.

As a result, the frustration grew too much for Swiatek, who threw her racquet down when trailing by a set and a break - much to the amusement of her opponent, who was watching on from the other side of the net.

You have to go back to 2023 and the Indian Wells semi-finals to find the last time Swiatek lost a match in straight sets by such a scoreline, winning just four games - that time beaten by former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.

Ostapenko very much has Swiatek’s number, having beaten her in straight sets in their first two meetings. But their next two encounters at least went the distance, sparking hopes that Swiatek was learning how to take on her opponent.

But whatever she learned in those matches, she could not put into practice in Doha, instead watching as her hopes of another successful title defence disappeared emphatically in a little over an hour.

The defeat leaves Swiatek on three losses for the year, having also been beaten by Coco Gauff in the United Cup, and Madison Keys in the Australian Open.

Ostapenko will play Amanda Anisimova for the title in Doha.
