British No. 1 Emma Raducanu reveals that Francisco Roig ended the partnership between the pair - 'We weren't agreeing on a few things'

Emma Raducanu has revealed that it was Francisco Roig who instigated the split between the pair earlier this year. The British No. 1 and Roig started working together last August but parted ways in the wake of Raducanu's shock second round Australian Open exit at the hands of the unseeded Anastasia Potapova. The young tennis star has since reunited with Mark Petchey ahead of Indian Wells.

Emma Raducanu has revealed that it was Francisco Roig who instigated the split between the pair earlier this year.

Roig, who had previously worked with Rafael Nadal, took over as Raducanu’s full-time coach last August.

However, the partnership lasted just six months after Raducanu was knocked out of the Australian Open in the second round by Anastasia Potapova.

The Spaniard was Raducanu’s ninth coach since her 2021 US Open triumph, when the now 23-year-old beat Canadian Leylah Fernandez in straight sets.

And Raducanu has since explained that it was Roig’s decision to part ways following the shock second round loss down under.

"After Australia, me and Francis [Francisco] were talking. We have a great relationship, we could have a really open and honest conversation," Raducanu said.

"He ended up saying, 'look, I don't think this is going in the way we both want it to' so he ended it really.

"In a way, I think we had a few moments where we weren't agreeing on a few things. Other than that, we still maintain a great relationship, and I've seen him here. It's been great to see a familiar, great face around."

Raducanu is once again working with Mark Petchey, who was due to be in California for commentary duties at Indian Wells anyway.

Petchey was Raducanu’s ad-hoc coach at Indian Wells last year, where she reached the quarter-finals before being knocked out by American Jessica Pegula.

The 55-year-old was also by Raducanu’s side having performed well in Rome and again at Wimbledon last year before she was knocked out by Aryna Sabalenka.

And on working with Petchey again, she said: "Mark was going to be here anyway for commentating, and I've been working with Alexis [Canter] who has been helping me so much.

"With Mark, I knew he'd be in Indian Wells, so I asked him to come out a few days earlier just to do some stuff with me on the court and try to feel in a better way with my game. 

"At the start of the year I didn't feel too good but the last few days I've been feeling better. It's not something that has really been organised going forward, but I knew he would be here. And it's been great. I always love being on court with him."

Outside noise 'affects' Raducanu

Raducanu also addressed the outside noise that has come with the number of coaching changes in recent years, adding: "It is a challenge because I think it affects some of the decisions I make.

"I don't want to start working with anyone not knowing if it's going to be 100% set in stone, because I feel like regardless of how or why it ends, it will be put on me, even if I didn't end it with Francis.

"It does affect me at some points, but I know at the end of the day I need to take the decision that's going to make me the best player. By having the experience of spending too long doing something I'm not comfortable doing, it's only affected me and made me feel worse about my tennis.

"Having gone through that, I don't want to because I know how it makes me feel on the court."

Raducanu gets her Indian Wells campaign underway on Friday, March 6, when she faces Anastasia Zakharova.
