There was high drama in the final of the men’s foil, as the Italy camp protested wildly with the officials after Filippo Macchi was beaten to gold by Cheung Ka Long.
In a tight battle for Olympic Games glory, Ka Long emerged as a 15-14 winner to defend his title.
It was an epic encounter, with Ka Long getting the win after a series of video reviews to look at tight calls.
On two occasions with the scores level at 14-14, Ka Long thought he had made the deciding hit, but his celebrations were cut short after video reviews.
Both men were called forward again, and this time it was Macchi seen celebrating as both lunged for a hit.
The decision was given to Ka Long, after which he said: “It’s insane for me because I try hard every day to fight, to come to Paris, to France, to qualify for the Olympics. And now, another dream has come true.”
Macchi was slumped on the side of the piste as Ka Long's camp came out with a Hong Kong flag for their winner.
And while the Hong Kong team celebrated, the Italy coach paced across the piste to remonstrate.
He was seen angrily pointing his finger at officials, seemingly suggesting their interpretation of the winning hit was incorrect.
The protests were to no avail, as the gold medal was awarded to Ka Long.
