The Gold Medals and Biggest Stories from this year’s FIE European Championships

Action kicked off on the morning of June 16 with the Senior Men's Épée witnessing the 23-year-old Italian Simone Mencarelli overcome Alon Sarid in the final on a score of 15-12 to win gold. Meanwhile, the bronze medals were secured by Belgium’s Neisser Loyola, adding to the bronze medal he won at the 2022 World Championships in Cairo, while the third-place position went to Conrad Seibaek Kongstad.

The Senior Women’s Saber also took place on this day in Antony, with Spaniard Lucia Martin-Portugues winning the gold medal by beating Yana Egorian in the final.

The gold medal for the 35-year-old added to her bronze medal from the 2024 European Championships in Basel, where she claimed this reward in the team event with Spain. Martin-Portugues overcame Ukrainian Alina Komashchuk, while Egorian beat Toscane Tori at the semi-final stage.

Wednesday’s action began with the Senior Women’s Foil, seeing Spaniard Maria Marino and 23-year-old Vladislava Peniushkina securing bronze.

Silver went to Arianna Errigo, adding to her impressive medal collection – she now has four second-place medals from the European Championships along with 16 golds across team and individual events.

Meanwhile, gold was secured by Olga Sopit. The Ukrainian beat Errigo 15-8 in the final to earn her first ever gold at the European Championships.

During the second day of action, the crowd witnessed the Senior Men’s Saber, which saw Jean-Phillippe Patrice earn gold by beating fellow Frenchman Maxime Pianfetti in the final. The bronze medals were awarded to Andras Szatmari and George Dragomir.

Katrina Lehis won the first gold medal of the third day of action at the European Championships, in the Senior Women's Épée, beating Germany’s Alexandra Ehler in the final on a scoreline of 15-11. This was Lehis’ second gold medal at the European Championships, adding to her first win back in 2018.

The bronze medals were secured by 2024 Olympic bronze medallists Alicja Klasik and Eszter Muhari.

Rafael Savin and Andrzej Rzadkowski battled it out to win the gold medal in the Senior Men’s Foil later in the day, with the Frenchman coming out on top to add to his haul of three silver and one bronze medal from previous Championships.

Italian Tommaso Martini and 26-year-old Anton Borodachev were awarded the bronze medal in this competition after the athletes were eliminated in the semi-final.

This Senior Men’s Foil was the final individual competition of the European Championships, with the last three days focusing on team events.

The first team event, the Senior Team Men’s Épée, was won by Italy with Davide Di Veroli, Matteo Galassi, Simone Mencarelli, and Andrea Santarelli in the lineup, while the silver medal was won by France and bronze was secured by Ukraine. Mencarelli left the European Championships with two gold medals after to his performances in the individual and team events.

Yana Egorian, Alina Mikhailova, Aleksandra Mikhailova, and Anastasiya Shorojova all won the gold medal in the Senior Team Women’s Saber on June 19.

The silver medal was won by France, with their team consisting of Sara Balzer, Manon Apithy, Toscane Tori, and Sarah Noutcha, while the bronze medal was won by Italy.

It felt like déjà vu during the first competition of the second day of team events as Italy won the gold medal, France was awarded silver, and Ukraine took home bronze in the Senior Team Women’s Foil.

Meanwhile, later in the day during the Senior Team Men’s Saber, Hungary won a gold medal thanks to Krisztian Rabb, Aron Szilagyi, Andras Szatmari, and Benedek Dallos.

The bronze medal went to France, while the silver was awarded to the Romanian team consisting of the athletes Vlad Covaliu, George Dragomir, Radu Nitu, and Razvan Ursachi.

France went on to secure medals in both competitions, as they opened with a gold medal in the Senior Team Women’s Épée before earning a silver in the Senior Team Men’s Foil.

The other two medallists in the Senior Team Women’s Épée were Hungary, who won silver, and Ukraine who secured the bronze.

Meanwhile, Italy secured the gold in the Senior Team Men’s Foil, with Germany securing the bronze with a team consisting of Alexander Kahl, Bastian Kappus, Niklas Diestelkamp, and Luis Klein.

The Asian Championships and the Pan-American Championships would be held at the same time as the European Championships, with Japan emerging as the most successful nation as they secured 15 medals: six gold, five silver, and four bronze.

South Korea finished second in the medals table with 10, four of these being gold, while Kazakhstan finished third in the medal table.

The United States topped the medal table with 10 gold medals and 18 medals overall at the Pan-American Championships. Mexico and Canada won one gold medal apiece, while Argentina, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico earned silver medals.

The African Championships took place at the start of June, with Egypt earning 18 medals, 9 of while were gold. Kenya and Algeria were the only other nations that secured gold medals.
