First time's a charm
The first continental meeting between the two sides took place in the old European Cup format.

It would be a while before they met in the competition once more, and it turned out to be the 2013/14 Champions League final.
Atletico were bouncing into the final having wrapped up the league title the previous week.
However, they were forced into a substitution after just nine minutes in the final with Diego Costa coming off injured.

The first leg ended in a goalless draw, but life was made even harder for Atletico in the second leg at the Bernabeu when they were reduced to 10 men.

The Madrid teams would meet for a third season in a row and also a second final in two years.

Atletico needed to produce a comeback for the ages in the second leg, and they got off to a brilliant start.
Saul and Antoine Griezmann put them into a 2-0 lead early, but the atmosphere at the Vicente Calderon was tempered when Real Madrid grabbed a crucial away goal before the break.
