CHELSEA HUMBLED AS RAMPANT PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN STORM THROUGH TO CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUARTER-FINALS

Reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain were at their ruthless best to dump Chelsea out of the UEFA Champions League, winning 3-0 at Stamford Bridge and 8-2 on aggregate to advance to the quarter-finals.

PSG carried over their momentum from last week’s 5-2 victory at the Parc des Princes, kicking off the second leg just as they finished the first – with liquid football and devastating finishing.

Inspired by first-half goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Bradley Barcola, as well as a second-half stunner from Senny Mayulu, Les Parisiens were a class above Liam Rosenior’s team.

The possession was almost even and Chelsea actually had more opportunities on paper but there couldn’t have been much more of a disparity in the standard of finishing.

Kvaratskhelia’s opener was a poke into the bottom right corner after a Mamadou Sarr error, Barcola’s strike was a stunner on the half-volley following a cheap Chelsea giveaway, and Mayulu’s settler was a curler from outside the box.

Liam Rosenior knew the tie was over as soon as PSG’s third of the night nestled beyond Robert Sanchez, as the head coach hooked Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandez to a chorus of Stamford Bridge boos.

In truth, the tie was over before the second leg had even begun. PSG still made the Bridge their stomping ground on a night to forget for Chelsea’s youngest-ever starting XI in a Champions League knockout fixture.

To make matters worse, Chelsea lost Trevoh Chalobah to injury late on. Rosenior will be hoping it’s nothing serious, but it didn’t look good for the defender as he was stretchered off.

PSG, meanwhile, head back to Paris joyous as they prepare to take on either Liverpool or Galatasaray in the last eight. Luis Enrique's men take another step towards defending their crown.

CHELSEA 'MILES OFF IT'

Owen Hargreaves believes Chelsea have a long way to go before they can consider their long-term project a success.

Hargreaves told TNT Sports: "The club should want to win the biggest trophies, the Premier League and Champions League.

"Right now they're miles off it. Brilliant young players but they have too many young players, they need experience.

"All these great Chelsea teams have had world-class, experienced players. John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Makelele, Essien. It's great to have these young kids but you need experienced players.

"The guys who own this football club, they have to understand that. You can't have three academy kids starting the back four against the European champions. It's impossible. It's never going to work."

EYE-OPENING NIGHT FOR CHELSEA

Joe Cole told TNT Sports: "That is a real leveller of where this club is compared to Paris. PSG are the gold standard, they are the champions of Europe, but it showed that Chelsea are a million miles away over the course of two legs.

"This isn't a Liam Rosenior problem. Liam's doing what he's doing, he's just come through the door.

"This is a problem with strategy and the direction of where the club are going. This is a real eye-opener to where we are as a club at the moment.

"There's a lot of money being spent and we need to really think of what we're doing and how we're doing it. That's simply not good enough.

"There's 20-year-olds and 19-year-olds on the pitch today. There's time to grow, improve and get better.

"They'll have better nights in their career. But as a football club, you've got to go football club first, not business first. Simple as that, or else you'll get performances like that."
