Have there ever been English teams in the final of every European competition? Arsenal, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace make history

TNT Sports have had a look through the history books to reveal if this has ever happened before.

Until now, there has not been a year with an English team in each of the three finals of the modern-day competitions.

Had Arsenal beaten eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals last season, history would have been made, with Manchester United and Tottenham in the final of last year's Europa League, and Chelsea in the Conference League showpiece.

Instead, it has happened this season.

Arsenal reached the Champions League final for the first time in 20 years with a 2-1 aggregate win over Atletico Madrid.

Aston Villa overturned a first-leg deficit against compatriots Nottingham Forest to win 4-1 on aggregate and reach the UEFA Europa League final - their first European final since 1982.

Crystal Palace capitalised on a healthy first-leg lead to reach their first European final in the shape of the UEFA Conference League after gaining a 5-2 aggregate win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

English teams have enjoyed plenty of success in both the Champions League and Europa League - or the European Cup and UEFA Cup, as they were formerly known.

The latter competition began with an all-English final in 1972, when Tottenham Hotspur beat Wolverhampton Wanderers in a two-legged final.

It was not until 1981 that English clubs reached the final of both competitions: Liverpool, managed by the great Bob Paisley, beat Real Madrid 1-0 in Paris to win the European Cup, while Ipswich Town, with Bobby Robson at the helm, got the better of AZ Alkmaar for the UEFA Cup crown.

Three years later, a Liverpool side with Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush leading the line won on penalties in the European Cup final against Roma in the Italian capital. Spurs also needed a penalty shoot-out in the same year to defeat Anderlecht for their first UEFA Cup.

There was something of a barren spell in the UEFA Cup for the remainder of the 80s and 90s, and the Champions League proved increasingly difficult, too.

But in 2006, Arsenal made it to their first Champions League final, losing 2-1 to Barcelona despite Sol Campbell's first-half opener. In the UEFA Cup, Steve McClaren guided Middlesbrough to an unlikely final in Eindhoven, though his side were beaten 4-0 by Sevilla. Ex-Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca netted a brace, with Luis Fabiano and Frederic Kanoute also on the scoresheet.

Perhaps the most remarkable year was 2019: there were four English teams across both finals, as Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool beat Mauricio Pochettino's Spurs 2-0 in Madrid for the Champions League trophy, and Chelsea thrashed London rivals Arsenal 4-1 in Baku to win the Europa League.

Two years later, it was another all-English final in the Champions League as Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea edged to a 1-0 victory over Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in Lisbon. And in the Europa League, Manchester United fell to defeat against Villarreal on penalties.

The Conference League is still in its infancy, but two English teams have already made it to the final. Crystal Palace became the third.

West Ham United won the competition in 2023, beating Fiorentina 2-1 thanks to Jarrod Bowen's 90th-minute winner that sparked jubilant celebrations in Prague. There were no English teams in the Europa League final that year, though, as Sevilla beat Jose Mourinho's Roma on penalties.

Last season, however, Chelsea beat Real Betis 4-1 in the Conference League final, while Spurs got the better of Manchester United in the Europa League.

The UEFA Cup Winners' Cup preceded the Conference League, pitting European teams that won their domestic cups against each other from 1960 until 1999.

Spurs, managed by Bill Nicholson, were the first English side to win it in 1963, beating Atletico 5-1 thanks to braces from the great Jimmy Greaves and Terry Dyson.

English clubs did well in the Cup Winners' Cup: West Ham, Manchester City, Chelsea, Everton, Manchester United and Arsenal all won it.

There were never English teams in the finals of the European Cup, UEFA Cup and Cup Winners' Cup in the same year, though.

Liverpool lost to Juventus in the 1985 European Cup final, while neighbours Everton beat Rapid Wien in the 1985 Cup Winners' Cup final.

Barcelona won the most Cup Winners' Cup titles (four), while Anderlecht, AC Milan, Chelsea and Dynamo Kyiv all managed two.
