Manchester City 1-1 Brighton result - Pep Guardiola's side held to draw as Erling Haaland's historic 150th goal cancelled out by Kaoru Mitoma

Erling Haaland scored his 150th goal for Man City and his 20th of the Premier League season as Pep Guardiola’s side were held to a 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium.

Haaland continued to rewrite history in a City shirt as he became the quickest Premier League player to reach 150 goals in all competitions, as the Norway international opened his account for the new year. However, he was unable to prevent his side dropping crucial points in the title race.

Guardiola was forced to make several changes to the side which drew 1-1 with Chelsea following injuries to defenders Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol, with 20-year-old Max Alleyne coming in to make his debut just days after being recalled from his loan spell at Watford.

Pascal Gross, who rejoined Brighton after an 18-month stint at Borussia Dortmund, could have made the dream return when he was denied a header from close range by Gianluigi Donnarumma just moments into the match.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side would continue to press for the opener as City were forced to weather a spell of possession by the visitors, with Ferdi Kadioglu forcing Donnarumma into action after a beautiful through ball by Georginio Rutter, while Abdukodir Khusanov came to the rescue as Rutter himself was played through on goal.

City weathered the early pressure and just five minutes before half-time, Diego Gomez clashed knees with Jeremy Doku in the box, with VAR encouraging referee Thomas Bramall to look at the monitor.

The penalty would be given, with Bramall citing a "careless tackle" by the Brighton midfielder, and it would be none other than Haaland to step up to end his three-game goal drought and register his 150th goal for City.

A sluggish start to the second half for Hurzeler’s side saw Bernardo Silva hit the upright when Yasin Ayari’s pass stopped at the feet of the City star.

Brighton, though, would find their equaliser against the run of play as Kaoru Mitoma fired a strike from the outside of the box into the bottom corner to spark new life into The Seagulls.

Mitoma would once again be on hand to cause problems for City as Brighton looked to capitalise on shaky defending by City, hitting the woodwork in the process.

In another history-making moment of the game, former Manchester City midfielder James Milner entered the pitch in the 84th minute to make his 650th Premier League appearance, leaving him just three short of Gareth Barry’s all-time record of 653.

Manchester City are five points behind league leaders Arsenal, who face Liverpool tomorrow, while Brighton sit 11th in the standings.

Erling Haaland gave City the lead from the penalty spot to break history records once again but Brighton's Kaoru Mitoma equalised in the second half to earn the Seagulls a point.

Brighton have a corner and potentially their last chance to snatch all three points but it's a poor delivery and it looks like that will be it.

Jeremy Doku opts to go from the edge of the box but his shot is soaring over the crossbar.

Haaland would have been destined to score from inside the box, but van Hecke is there once again to make a crucial block. He's been massive for Brighton tonight.

It certainly hasn't felt like a 1-1 draw but can either side steal all three points at the death?

Doku's pass is blocked but it falls to Rayan Cherki, who is off-balanced and sees his effort go wide of the target.

Doku finds Cherki in the box but his shot has way too much power and fires over the target.

James Milner comes on to make his 650th Premier League appearance to replace Yasin Ayari, who will be relieved to come off.

Goalscorer Mitoma also sees his evening come to an end as he's replaced by Tom Watson.

They've been let off the hook again!

Verbruggen plays it to Ayari, who gives the ball straight to a City shirt and Haaland has surely got to score again but Verbruggen scoops it and breaths a sigh of relief.

But then seconds later, Haaland is again causing problems as he sprints onto goal but hits the side-netting.

Just as Brighton seemed down and out, Mitoma came to the rescue and we suddenly have a game again!

Danny Welbeck comes on for Rutter, whilst Brajan Gruda replaces Diego Gomez.

Corner comes in and finds Haaland, who directs his header goalwards but Kadioglu is well positioned to head it away from danger.

Haaland attempts a shot from the edge of the box but it's lacking the power needed and is collected by the Brighton goalkeeper.

And Guardiola responds with a triple change...

Brighton have to the 2-1 ahead!

A ball over the top unleashes Mitoma down the left side, which catches out Nunes, he cuts the ball back infront of goal but it's misread and the moment disappears.

Mitoma attempts to keep it alive but it hits the woodwork and is collected by Donnarumma.

Kaoru Mitoma is the next Brighton player to go into the book as he takes one for the team to deny Phil Foden a run on goal.

City are all over the place and Brighton go on the attack and Kadioglu sends a ball across goal for Mitoma, who puts it back into the six-yard box, but Rodri is there to deal with it.
