The permanent head coach role at Old Trafford is now Michael Carrick’s to turn down, The Guardian reports, following Sunday's 3-2 victory over Liverpool which ensured United will compete in Europe's premier club competition.

Carrick is reportedly yet to hold talks with the club over his future beyond the summer, but after turning their fortunes around following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, it is believed the former midfielder will be offered the chance to continue.

The report says: ”Sunday’s 3-2 win over Liverpool secured a top-five finish, taking Carrick’s record to 10 victories and two draws from 14 league matches. Sources with knowledge of the situation believe the role will be his to turn down.

The Telegraph adds: ”Only Kobbie Mainoo, who has just signed a new contract, and Bruno Fernandes, who has a release clause in his deal, figure in their plans.

"United want their captain to stay but it is not a given. However, qualifying for the Champions League and showing ambition will improve their chances of keeping him.

”Manuel Ugarte is up for sale and United want at least two midfielders to supplement Mainoo. Telegraph Sport has revealed that Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni is among their targets.

”Casemiro is leaving at the end of his contract, with Major League Soccer in the United States, where Inter Miami and LA Galaxy have registered interest, now a more likely destination than the Saudi Pro League, which has made several attempts to sign him in the past.”

West Ham want Nuno stay

West Ham, meanwhile, are hopeful Nuno Espirito Santo will stay at the club even if they drop down to the Championship, the Telegraph reports.

The Hammers are fighting for survival, a point adrift of closest rivals Tottenham Hotspur with three matches remaining, and it appears likely Nuno’s future hinges on West Ham’s Premier League status.

The Telegraph adds: ”If relegation is confirmed then either party can terminate the Portuguese’s deal – with two years left to run after this season – without compensation being paid.

”It remains to be seen whether Nuno would want to stay and try to bring West Ham back from the Championship, where he has worked before when he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017 and led them to promotion.

”So far, he has not told West Ham that he intends to continue and, for now, wants to concentrate on trying to keep them up.”
