Liverpool have gone big in the summer market in an attempt to defend their Premier League title this season. TNT Sports' Julien Laurens hailed their efforts as "the greatest transfer window" on the condition that Alexander Isak joins from Newcastle United. But he also reserved praise for title rivals and upcoming opposition Arsenal, whose defensive record continues to impress.

TNT Sports expert Julien Laurens has labelled Liverpool's summer business as "the greatest transfer window", if they sign Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak before Monday's deadline.

The Premier League champions have spent big money on the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and Isak also strongly linked.

And ahead of Sunday's highly anticipated Premier League clash with Arsenal at Anfield, Laurens claimed Liverpool have been by far the standout club in terms of signings this summer.

"Isak is still a Newcastle player, not a Liverpool player, and I don't know if it will happen before the end of the transfer window," he told TNT Sports.

"If it does happen and Isak becomes a Liverpool player, maybe even with Marc Guehi, then I think this is the greatest transfer window that any club has ever had.

"If you think about Wirtz and Frimpong and Kerkez and Ekitike and Isak and Guehi, and even if Isak and Guehi don't come, this is already a pretty amazing, kind of Galactico transfer window from a Liverpool point of view. They have been the outstanding one [in the window]."

Liverpool have made a strong start to the Premier League season, winning their opening two matches against Bournemouth and Newcastle.

Arsenal have the best defence in the world

Arne Slot's side have been in free-scoring form, netting seven goals so far, though they have shipped four and looked susceptible defensively at St James' Park.

And their sternest test so far will come against an Arsenal side also fresh off back-to-back victories against Manchester United and Leeds United, having yet to concede a goal.

"I think Arsenal have the best defence in the world right now," Laurens said. "[David] Raya, [Jurrien] Timber, [William] Saliba, Gabriel [Magalhaes] and [Riccardo] Calafiori at left-back - or even [Myles] Lewis-Skelly - is just phenomenal.

"I know they're four centre-backs - which helps with defending, they're huge - but the understanding that they have, the awareness collectively of that line, is just something very special that they've worked a lot on and took a long time to gel in, but now they are just outstanding. They're still very young and going to get better and better."

Mikel Arteta's Gunners finished 10 points behind Liverpool last season, but Laurens has backed them to get closer this time.

Arsenal have a difficult start to the season, hosting Nottingham Forest - live on TNT Sports and discovery+ on September 13 - and facing both Manchester City and Newcastle after the international break next month.

"I think Arsenal have to stay in touch with Liverpool for as long as possible, including the game at Anfield, and then Man City, and Newcastle away - Arsenal have by far the toughest first couple of months in the Premier League," Laurens added.

"Let's see where they are after that, but if they're in touch with Liverpool still, then I think they will have a great chance to go all the way and maybe win the Premier League."
