Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg claims that Los Blancos president Florentino Perez has been in "direct talks" with Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes over the last few days.
Madrid are seeking a permanent manager in the hotseat next season to replace interim boss Alvaro Arbeloa.
Arbeloa replaced Xabi Alonso at the turn of the year after the World Cup winner left the club by "mutual agreement".
However, Benfica boss Mourinho now looks to be the frontrunner to return to the Spanish capital where he won the league title and the Copa del Rey in his first spell in charge from 2010-13.

Barca want second Rashford loan

Plettenberg is also reporting that Barcelona are pursuing a second loan deal for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.
The England international has impressed during a season-long loan at Barca and there is an option to make the move permanent for €30 million (£26m).
However, the transfer journalist reports that Barca want to negotiate the fee down, or secure a second loan.
Barca head coach Hansi Flick is said to have approved Rashford staying at the club.
Rashford, who first broke through from the academy in 2016, is under contract at Man Utd until the summer of 2028.
He has 13 goals and 13 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions this season.
Rashford has already lifted the Supercopa with his new club, while they are also closing in on La Liga glory with an 11-point lead at the top.

Arsenal scout Osimhen

Could Arsenal make another striker signing this summer?
It has been reported by AS that Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta watched Galatasaray v Fenerbahce on Sunday, and had his eyes on Gala forward Victor Osimhen.
The forward is said to be a ”major option” for Arsenal in the summer transfer window, even though they splashed out to sign Viktor Gyokeres last year.
Galatasaray winger Baris Alper Yilmaz and goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir are also said to be on Arsenal’s radar.
Arsenal face Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final on Wednesday evening, live on TNT Sports and HBO Max.

Cucurella on Barca's radar

Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella could be a summer transfer target for Barcelona, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The defender is under contract until 2028 but suggested earlier this year that he would be open to a return to Barca, where he started his professional career.
It is reported by Mundo Deportivo that Cucurella would consider leaving Chelsea if an ”attractive offer arrives” and Barcelona is a club he would ”seriously consider”.
Chelsea look set to miss out on qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League as they currently sit eighth in the Premier League, 10 points behind fifth-placed Aston Villa.
Chelsea may also need to raise funds in the summer for Financial Fair Play reasons.

Liverpool to miss out on Diomande?

Liverpool could be set to miss out on Yan Diomande as RB Leipzig are to offer him a new deal.
Diomande, 19, has been reported as Liverpool’s ‘top target’ as they look to replace Mohamed Salah.
But BILD’s Christian Falk reports that Diomande could stay with Leipzig for another year and Liverpool ”may find it hard to lure him away”.
According to Falk: ”The club’s plan is to extend his contract in the summer, increase his salary, and include a release clause.”
It has been reported that Leipzig want €100m (£87m) for Diomande.
