Olivia Smith was the hero as Arsenal came from behind to beat Lyon 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

Smith scored an 83rd-minute winner at the Emirates Stadium, where Ingrid Engen's own-goal cancelled out Jule Brand's first-half opener.

Lyon had never lost the first leg of a Champions League semi-final, and had never been beaten on English soil.

All appeared to be going to plan for the eight-time champions in the 19th minute, when Sofie Svava stole possession before Lily Yohannes fed Brand, who drifted into a gaping penalty area before sweeping home.

However, Arsenal responded well in the second half. Smith went close before the awarding of a penalty was overturned following a VAR review.

Nevertheless, the Gunners equalised in fortunate circumstances just before the hour mark. Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler spilled Mariona Caldentey's tame free-kick, with the recovering Engen only succeeding in helping the ball over her own line.

The visitors almost regained their lead in the 66th minute, with Kadidiatou Diani's rippling strike rattling the crossbar.

Yet it was the reigning champions who edged their noses ahead in the tie seven minutes from time.

Smith forced a fumble from Endler after Lindsey Heaps' loose pass invited pressure on the goalkeeper, before slotting into an empty net to give Arsenal what could prove to be a priceless lead.
