MBAPPE STARS ON 100TH CAP AS FRANCE SEAL KNOCKOUT PROGRESS

Kylian Mbappe scored twice on his 100th appearance for France, who booked their place in the 2026 World Cup knockout stages with a 3-0 victory over Iraq.

Ousmane Dembele was also on target for Les Bleus in the storm-affected Group I clash at Philadelphia Stadium, where play was suspended for two hours at half-time due to severe weather warnings.

Mbappe, fresh from becoming France's all-time leading scorer against Senegal, picked up from where he left off after just 14 minutes, arrowing a 20-yard drive beyond Iraq goalkeeper Ahmed Basil.

A superbly-timed Hussein Ali sliding challenge denied the skipper a second goal in the 41st minute, before the deteriorating weather conditions forced both sides to spend an extended period in their dressing rooms.

The lengthy delay did little to halt France's momentum. They were 2-0 up within nine minutes of the restart, as Dembele pounced on Zaid Tahseen's error from a goal-kick, unselfishly squaring for Mbappe to tuck away.

Michael Olise was hugely unfortunate not to add a third goal when his delicate lob clipped the crossbar, while Adrien Rabiot headed wide from close range with the goal at his mercy.

The third goal did arrive, though, midway through the second half, with Olise driving at the Iraq defence before feeding Dembele, who drilled the ball home.

Mbappe went close to completing his hat-trick later on, but the damage was already done by France, who progressed beyond the group stage for the fourth World Cup in succession.

France will play Norway, who beat Senegal on Monday night to progress to the last 32, in their final group game.

IRAQ SET UNWANTED HISTORY AS HOPES HANG BY A THREAD

The Lions of Mesopotamia's wait for a first ever point at the World Cup finals continues.

They are the first Asian nation to lose each of their first five matches in the competition, stretching back to their debut in 1986.

Arnold notably made a change in goal from the opening defeat to Norway, during which Jalal Hassan gifted Erling Haaland a tap-in.

Yet it was a case of Deja vu here, with Iraq once again punished when attempting to play out from the back for the second goal.

Indeed, Tahseen's square pass from the goal-kick caught Basil completely off-guard, and they were ruthlessly punished by Dembele and Mbappe.

The scoreline could have been far worse for Iraq but, to their credit, they continued to plug away in a desperate search for a route back into the contest.

While not yet eliminated, Iraq must beat Senegal in their final Group I match, and look to recover their unhealthy goal difference somewhat to stand any chance of progressing as one of the best third-placed sides.

Dembele then got in on the act to put the result firmly beyond doubt, with this now the fourth straight World Cup that France have started with back-to-back wins.

Importantly, too, Deschamps' side ended a run of six matches without recording a clean sheet - something they can certainly build on in the knockout stages.
