Strickland upsets Chimaev to regain title
Sean Strickland became a two-time middleweight champion after enjoying a split-decision victory over Khamzat Chimaev, who tasted defeat for the first time.
Rather than the explosive fight their pre-fight war of words and clash at the face-off suggested was on the cards, it was a war of attrition with both fighters having their moments.
Chimaev dominated the first with his takedowns but the second and third went to Strickland, though at the end of the third the Chechen fighter got on top and continued this dominance through the fourth round.
With the fight coming down to the last, two of the three judges preferred Strickland’s quantity of strikes rather than Chimaev’s power shots and takedowns, which did not lead to control on the champion’s part.
After the war of words before, despite his disappointment, Chimaev put the belt around Strickland’s waist and they embraced. Strickland then apologised for his pre-match talk but bad blood will surely resurface before an inevitable rematch.
In the co-main event Joshua Van beat Tatsuro Taira in an instant classic for the flyweight title.
In a battle between ground game expertise and brutal striking, Taira won the first and might have been on the way to the second before a brutal knockdown left him bleeding from mouth and nose and he was saved by the buzzer.
Going into the last it was level, but Van’s body attack opened up Taira’s defences and after a flurry of shots with the Japanese fighter still standing but not defending himself, the referee stepped in.
Elsewhere, Alexander Volkov won a battle of the big men, taking a unanimous decision over Waldo Cortes-Acosta. The fight between the number two and four ranked heavyweights rather showed the lack of strength in depth in the division though.
Strickland wins on points
He takes a split decision 48-47 (twice), with Chimaev winning the other card 48-47. The pair embrace at the end.
Chimaev-Strickland: Round 5
Chimaev takes Strickland down early but cannot keep him there with Strickland getting back to his feet. Strickland is busier as they stand up and blood comes from Chimaev's mouth, while Strickland's nose flows from the champion's right hands. Chimaev takes Strickland down going into the last minute but the challenger is back to his feet quickly. As they get to their feet a right hurts Chimaev but he then lands a good right and left on Strickland before the challenger forces him backwards as the fight ends. A hard fight to call.
Chimaev-Strickland: Round 4
Chimaev comes out with more confidence and a pep to his step. Strickland looks the more tired and his defence is less effective. After more land shots, with Chimaev the more telling, the champion executes a takedown in the last minute and has his opponent's back against the Octagon for the rest of the round. That ensures he takes the round. The current score depends on how the third is scored. The momentum is all with Chimaev though.
Chimaev-Strickland: Round 3
A less dramatic round with Chimaev stalking Strickland but initially is being caught with more shots than he is landing. Towards the end he evens the ledger and bloodies Strickland's nose and mouth, plus wobbles the challenger in the closing stages.
Chimaev-Strickland: Round 2
The pair stand up for the first 90 seconds and Strickland probably just edges it, though both show good defence. Chimaev tries for a takedown by Strickland ends on top of him on the mat for the next minute. Strickland lets him up and lands a right hand. After a failed takedown, Chimaev stayed down and Strickland leap on him landing big blows before holding him down for another minute. Clearly Strickland's round.
Chimaev-Strickland: Round 1
A dominant round for Chimaev. Strickland was patient and kept his cool while Chimaev took his back and put on submission moves but, although Chimaev had a cut on his nose, there was little offence from the American.
They touch gloves while trash talking...
And now it is underway.
It's TIME...
A reminder, as well as the grudge match, the middleweight title is on the line.
So much security in the Octagon...
There is no chance these two get their hands on each other until it is time. Chimaev is winking at Strickland.
Chimaev met with boos
He runs to the Octagon with a smile on his face. He can't wait to get down to action
Strickland comes into the arena
He receives a big ovation as he makes his way to the Octagon.
The Main Event is next...
The talking stops and Chimaev and Strickland can get their hands on each other. You can watch on HBO Max.
Van stops Taira in Round 5
Probably level going into the last, Van twice stopped Taira from taking him down to the mat. Body shots had an effect on the challenger and broke his defences. After which big shots shook Taira and saw him turning his back to his opponent and taking shots to the back of the head, leading to the referee stepping in.
Van-Taira: Round 4
A very good round. Taira came out and landed good shots early then, after it looked like Van was wresting control back, the Japanese fighter put the American on his back and had control for a couple of minutes. Van then turned it into a leg triangle before losing his grip. Back on their feet, Van landed a couple more big shots before the end of the round.
Van-Taira: Round 3
Taira's face is a bloody mess after being caught by a number of good shots. After being put down to the mat he took a big knee to the face. Taira got back into the fight in the closing moments with a take down and good strikes.
Van-Taira: Round 2
Taira was looking good in the second round until the last minute when Van lands a massive right hand which puts Taira down crashing on his back. Taira was fortunate the buzzer came to his rescue then.
Van-Taira: Round 1
Taira takes the first round by controlling his opponent on the mat. The crowd don't like it but it's part of the game.
Co-Main Event next
Champion Joshua Van (16-1) takes on Tatsuro Taira (18-1) for the flyweight title.
Volkov wins on points
He takes the fight by unanimous decision, 29-28 twice and 30-27.
Volkov-Cortes-Acosta: Round 3
Volkov appeared to be wearing down and Cortes-Acosta caught him with a number of flush shots. Volkov circled his opponent and kept him at bay until late in the round when the Dominican Republic fighter landed with winging blows. It looks like being a case of who wins the first round takes the fight.
Volkov-Cortes-Acosta: Round 2
Again more posturing then striking for the first half of the round but Volkov landed a couple of potent one-twos, after kicks first. A left jab wobbles Cortes-Acosta. Volkov is bleeding from the nose.
Volkov-Cortes-Acosta: Round 1
Cortes-Acosta stalked Volkov throughout the round. He did not land as many blows but he got through with the telling ones.
Big boys in action next
Heavyweights Alexander Volkov (39-11) and Waldo Cortes-Acosta (17-2) will do battle.
Brady wins on points
Brady-Buckley: Round 3
The same tune played again. The crowd would rather see more striking but it is an incredible skill displayed by Brady.
Brady-Buckley: Round 2
Immediately Brady takes Buckley down and controls him on the ground for the first half of the round, after a brief interlude on their feet, there is another takedown and the domination continues. This has to have taken toll on Buckley.
Brady-Buckley: Round 1
Brady lands a couple of good shots early on, while avoiding Buckley's strikes. Then he takes Buckley to the ground. He then controls his opponent on the mat until the end of the round, alternating between delivering ground and pound and jujitsu skills.
Welterweights up next
Sean Brady (18-2) takes on knockout artist Joaquin Buckley (21-7).
Chris Weidman inducted into Hall of Fame
Green submits Stephens in Round 1
Green landed some good shots before kicking Stephens low prompting a break in proceedings. Green then forced him to the floor and threw continual ground and pound, a lot of which were blocked but he landed some hard shots including a couple of elbows. Stephens then was close to securing an elbow locked before the King landed a lot more shots and forced a submission through a rear-naked choke.
The King is up first
King Green (34-17-1) takes on Jeremy Stephens (29-22) in a lightweight contest.
The Main Card is next
You can watch all the card live on HBO Max.
Gautier wins by KO in Round 2
The second was going the same way as the first until Gautier countered a jab with a right hand which put Diaz down and had him looking hazy on the mat. There was time for one more tomahawk shot before the referee stepped in.
Gautier-Diaz: Round 1
Diaz is mostly on defence making sure Gautier does not get through with his brutal right hands, with the former only having to take one flush - an uppercut. Gautier also comes close to landing head kicks. Diaz lands a few jabs of his own and tries for a couple of takedowns but can't get his opponent on the mat.
Last Prelim should be a belter
Ateba Gautier (10-1) takes on Ozzy Diaz (10-3) in what promises to be an explosive middleweight contest.
Amosov submits Alvarez in Round 2
Alvarez had a bit of early success with strikes before Amosov slammed him to the ground and then locked in a choke hold forcing the Spaniard to tap. He then produced a fantastic breakdancing spin to celebrate.
Alvarez-Amosov: Round 1
The 14-ranked welterweight Amosov dominated from the off, taking his opponent now and maintaining control for the rest of the round, expertly manipulating his opponent's legs to hinder his balance. It's not the action the fans want but it is elite grappling.
Alvarez-Amosov in action next
A welterweight battle between Spaniard Joel Alvarez (23-3) and Ukrainian Yaroslav Amosov (29-1).
Dawson submits Rebecki in Round 3
Dawson takes Rebecki down and tries to lock in choke hold on the mat. Dawson struggles to lock it in, making three submission attempts, but maintains control on his opponent's back and in the final thirty seconds, he forces Rebecki to tap.
Dawson-Rebecki: Round 2
Rebecki drops Dawson with a huge left hand, then right hook early in the round which puts his opponent down. He then gets Dawson's back but maybe allows his opponent to regroup and the pair are back fighting on equal terms in the mid-part of the round. Rebecki lands another straight left that wobbles Dawson late in the round.
Dawson-Rebecki: Round 1
Dawson busts Rebecki's right eye early on with a right hand and then gets his back holding him for two minutes before Rebecki takes control in the last minute.
More lightweight action
Grant Dawson (23-3-1) takes on Mateusz Rebecki (20-4).
Miller submits Gordon in Round 1
Gordon put Miller down and then received a low blow which saw the fight delayed for a minute. Gordon then wobbled Miller again but was caught in a guillotine and was forced to tap.
Veterans get the prelims underway
With a combined age of 79 veteran lightweights Jim Miller (38-19) and Jared Gordon (21-8) get it on.
