Hawkins shows consistency to build healthy lead against Williams

Barry Hawkins heads into tomorrow evening’s concluding session with a healthy 10-6 lead over Mark Williams after a lengthy second session battle.

The pair came into the evening level at 4-4, but the Hawk capitalised on his opponent’s errors to build a lead thanks to breaks of 73, 64 and 66.

The world number 11 scored his second century of the match to take a three-frame lead as he looked to run away with the last-16 match.

However, three-time world champion Williams showed all his experience to edge the 12th frame on the final black.

Not deterred, Hawkins showed consistent potting and won an epic 13th frame, which lasted an hour and contained some enthralling tactical play.

The pair continued to battle with Hawkins edging into a 9-6 lead, before Williams replied again with a crucial break of 54 to win the 15th frame by a single point.

However, the session belonged to Hawkins who finished with a break of 89 and required just three frames tomorrow to book his quarter-final spot.

The Hawk has been the more consistent potter of the pair throughout the session and has been patient for his chances.

Williams drops four penalty points before opening the door for Hawkins to add a further point to his score.

It’s Hawkins again who seizes the initiative in this frame and builds a 21-point break with some quick potting.

The Hawk looks to seal the frame with a long range pink which bounces back out of the pocket. Williams now has a nicely positioned table to work with.

Hawkins looked comfortable with his break in this frame. However, a miss-cue on the black allows Williams back to the table.

With just three balls remaining on the table Williams edges the black onto the cushion, damaging his chances of the required snooker.

Williams then takes advantage of the blue being over the pocket but still requires a snooker.

The Hawk turns defence into attack and pulls off a snooker which results in the pink being open. However, the Englishman can only edge the pink onto the pocket as this mammoth frame continues.

TNT Sports pundit Dave Hendon said that this is turning into an ‘old school match’ at the Crucible with a late finish and two more frames to come.

Williams almost pulls off an unbelievable fluke shot onto the green, and then pots it moments later.

The Welsh Potting Machine needs a snooker and places the cue ball beautifully against the black.

Hendon adds ”the old master has got him”. However, Hawkins escapes with a shot off the cushion.

Williams responds with a ‘killer shot’ which his opponent again responds to.

Williams and Hawkins both show their frustration at missing chances on the green.

Hawkins is the first to blink and a slight mistake leaves the brown open for Williams to pot. He follows with the blue is over-run and then leaves himself a difficult pink.
