GAME, SET AND MATCH! - SINNER 7-5 6-1 AUGER-ALIASSIME
It’s all over.
Sinner eases through a game to 30 to open his title defence with the win.
It had been a decent contest up until FAA picked up that leg issue and the second-set breadstick was an unfair reflection on how the Canadian was playing or on his efforts to battle through to the finish line when he could so easily have just retired.

SINNER 7-5 4-1 AUGER-ALIASSIME
The intriguing, competitive contest that we saw for much of that opening set has been replaced by what feels like a procession to the end now.
Sinner doesn’t have to maintain such a high level here to post a game to 15 and even shows his ruthless side as he throws in a dropper that would usually be tracked down, but it still gets the better of FAA as he gingerly trots forward to no avail.

The eighth seed can’t quite settle and at 30-15 he blasts a drive volley long and a forehand wide.
Sinner again snatches a return into the net to allow his opponent to make deuce, but FAA leaks a backhand long to offer up a second break point.
Jannik fluffs his lines with a return long and Felix works his way to game point with a plus-one forehand that just about does the job.
The Canadian then comes up with a timely clutch serve to get on the board and earn a ripple of appreciative applause from the Turin crowd.

SINNER 7-5 3-0 AUGER-ALIASSIME

The Italian resets to bounce back and assume a 40-30 lead, but then drills long to prolong the game at deuce.
Felix is doing well to engage in the rallies but he skews a backhand wide and then rifles one long to allow Jannik to consolidate.

SET! - SINNER 7-5 AUGER-ALIASSIME
FAA fires backhands wide and long as a 30-0 lead evaporates.
The Canadian zaps a forehand into the net to cough up another set point but Sinner lets him off the hook by following suit.
The eighth seed looks a touch troubled by something in his leg and when he offers up a second set point of the game - Sinner’s third overall – he tamely slices into the net to end a tight 58-minute opener on a low note from his perspective.
