One of the traits of elite players is that when it matters most, they turn up. We're currently witnessing a run of games from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia that demonstrates he belongs in that group. The Georgian has scored five goals in his past five UEFA Champions League games, with one assist to boot, and he found the net again on Wednesday as Paris Saint-Germain beat Liverpool 2-0.

Paris Saint-Germain are 2-0 up in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool after an impressive showing in the first leg of their tie, and they now have one foot in the semi-finals.

It is too early to say whether Luis Enrique's side will be able to retain the title they won last season, but if they do, they will certainly have one man to thank.

Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has been on a tear in the past few weeks, and he has helped take PSG past Monaco, then Chelsea, and now possibly Liverpool.

Kvaratslhelia scored the second goal in PSG's 2-0 win over The Reds on Wednesday, dancing through defenders before calmly going past compatriot Giorgi Mamardashvili and slotting home.

It was another reminder of just how unique a talent the Georgian is. There are so few players in the world who move with the almost hypnotic fluidity that he does, it's not hard to see why defenders fall under his spell.

One of the fascinating aspects of Kvaratskhelia's recent good form is how it seems to be completely isolated to the Champions League.

Here are his stats since the start of February.

Yes, that's 1.2 goal contributions per game in the Champions League and 0.29 per game in Ligue 1.

It is worth stating that he didn't play the full 90 in a single one of those seven Ligue 1 games, whilst he did do it twice in the Champions League, but the numbers still paint a stark picture.

Why would this be the case? Without talking to the player himself, that is difficult to know, but there could be a myriad reasons. Perhaps he's finding more space in Europe? Maybe he's getting himself up for the big European games under the lights?

TNT Sports' European football expert Julien Laurens has a theory.

"I think he’s a big-game player," said Laurens. "He loves those big games, big nights. He loves the spring. He comes alive at this time of the season, like he did last year.

"He doesn’t despise the Saturday afternoon kick-offs against Angers, but really I think what gets him going is those big Champions League nights, big games in the league as well under the lights. That’s what happens.

"I think he becomes clutch in those moments. I think he loves that kind of responsibility, that pressure.

"When the team is playing so well around him, which is not always the case, sometimes in the league earlier in the season, they take it a bit lightly, or for granted, because they’re so much better than everyone else.

"But the Champions League is different, and when everybody is on the same tune around him, you see what happens yesterday - and against Chelsea."

Opta's data can back this up. Since he joined PSG in the 2025 January transfer window, Kvaratskhelia has now been involved in 17 Champions League goals (11 goals and six assists), and that is more than any other PSG player in that time.

And Laurens is right, those moments against Chelsea and Liverpool are so indicative of him rising to the pressure.

Take his first goal in the first game against Chelsea. PSG were 3-2 up as the game went into the final stages. It had been a fierce, back-and-forth affair in which PSG had just about edged ahead.

Then Kvaratskhelia produced a truly jaw-dropping moment to effectively kill the tie and completely destroy Chelsea's morale after the devastating manner in which PSG had scored their third.

The speed with which he hits the shot, in combination with the traffic around him, is remarkable in any context, but in the context of the game, it just makes it more impressive.

And the goal against Liverpool has some similar hallmarks with the slippery way he can weave around defenders.

Once again, in that moment, to keep your composure and finish the way he did, is just such good football.

As per Opta, since the start of last season, Kvaratskhelia has produced 11 goal involvements in the Champions League knockout stages - only Barcelona forward Raphinha has more, with 13.

As Laurens said, this is when Kvaratskhelia comes alive. When the lights are on, and it's knockout football, something seems to awaken within him, and that makes PSG an even more dangerous proposition.
