Arsenal are one game away from their first UEFA Champions League final in 20 years, and manager Mikel Arteta has promised his side will play "like beasts" to get the job done.

The Gunners host Atletico Madrid at the Emirates in their semi-final second leg on Tuesday, with the scores locked at 1-1 after a tight affair in the Spanish capital last week.

Viktor Gyokeres' penalty put Arsenal in front, before Julian Alvarez's spot-kick in the second half levelled matters.

There was also some controversy as Arteta was left "very upset" that a penalty won by Eberechi Eze was overturned by VAR.

However, the Arsenal boss has moved on and has full belief that his side will produce their best on Tuesday and reach a first Champions League final since 2006.

"Go and grab it," he said. "When you are in front of such an opportunity, it means that you are ready to deliver, and the team is going to go for the first minute to go and get that.

"We always talked about in this moment that we need players with a great emotional state, because I think that determines the rest, and we are feeling very good for tomorrow.

"I feel the energy in and amongst the team, our supporters. So this is the moment that we want to live together.

"We have a lot of work as a club, as a team, after 20 years to be in this position again. We are so hungry to get the game that we want tomorrow and go through to that final."

He added: ”The only thing I have is to finish preparing tomorrow, as best as possible, the game, the team, and that we go out there like beasts, enjoy the moment and go for it.”

Arsenal last reached the Champions League final under Arsene Wenger two decades ago, when they played Barcelona in Paris.

Sol Campbell's first-half header had Arsenal 14 minutes away from winning their first major European title, but a quickfire double from Samuel Eto'o and Juliano Belletti broke the Gunners' hearts.

They have had to wait a long time before getting the chance to return to the final, after squandering the opportunity last season against eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.

Arteta, however, has always visualised club captain Martin Odegaard lifting the Champions League trophy and has not given up on making it happen.

”I’ve done it many years ago, the thing that I had in mind for this club,” said Arteta.

”You can never promise to win major trophies. You can promise to work every single day with the vision and implementing, and being determined with the ideas and the decisions that you take to bring this club to be one of the best in Europe.

"Here we are, now we have to make the next step.”

Should Arsenal progress on Tuesday, they will face the winners of Bayern Munich or PSG, who play their semi-final second leg a day later, live on TNT Sports and HBO Max.
