How many Champions League and Europa League spots are there? Who was relegated to the Championship? The impact of Premier League final day explained

Despite Arsenal wrapping up the Premier League title on Tuesday, there were still plenty of meaningful games up and down the league on the final day of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United’s relegation battle reached its climax and places in all three European competitions were up for grabs with every team from fifth to 13th in with a chance.

So how did it all play out? From the UEFA Champions League to the Championship, who will be playing in which competitions next season?

Mikel Arteta’s side took to the field for the first time since Manchester City’s draw with Bournemouth handed them the Premier League title and signed off for the summer with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

They then got to lift the Premier League trophy in front of their travelling supporters while City succumbed to defeat against Aston Villa but were already assured of second place.

Arsenal's final margin of victory is seven points and they will now attempt to double up when they face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on Saturday, May 30, live on TNT Sports and HBO Max.

City’s victory in the FA Cup final over Chelsea means there will be eight European qualification places based on league positions.

Aston Villa were the kingmakers after their UEFA Europa League triumph. If they had finished fifth then the Premier League's sixth-placed finisher would have qualified for the Champions League but their win at the Etihad Stadium confirmed they end the season in fourth place so they will represent England on Europe’s biggest club stage alongside Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City and Manchester United.

Sunderland were the surprise package on the final day, beating Chelsea 2-1 to leapfrog The Blues, Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion and claim a Europa League place.

Dango Ouattara had the opportunity to clinch a European berth for Brentford with a free header in the dying seconds at Anfield but he directed it wide so Keith Andrews’ side agonisingly finished ninth - only behind Brighton by a goal difference of three.

The Seagulls will be the Premier League’s only representatives in the UEFA Conference League, while Bournemouth join Sunderland in the Europa League as expected - they needed a host of results to go differently to realise their outside shot of qualifying for the Champions League.

Crystal Palace could yet become the ninth Premier League team in Europe next season, though, because if they win the Conference League against Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday, May 27, then they will qualify for the 2026/27 Europa League.

West Ham began the day staring at relegation following defeat to Newcastle United in their penultimate game. It was not all over for The Hammers but Nuno Espirito Santo’s side sat two points behind Spurs, who finished their season with a home match against Everton.

With a goal difference of 12 between the two sides in Spurs' favour, West Ham almost certainly needed to gain three points on their rivals on the final day and they did all they could at home to Leeds United, beating The Whites 3-0 thanks to strikes from Taty Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson.

However, Everton’s failure to beat Antonin Kinsky meant Tottenham’s survival was assured, and Joao Palhinha’s winning goal just before half-time gave Roberto De Zerbi’s men insurance.

West Ham will join Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship. They had already been consigned to relegation.
