Borussia Dortmund monitoring Jadon Sancho, Steven Gerrard on shortlist for Championship job - Paper Round

Tuesday’s Paper Round leads on Jadon Sancho, who is yet to start a Premier League game at Aston Villa this season following his loan move from Manchester United. Former club Borussia Dortmund are monitoring his situation. Elsewhere, Steven Gerrard is in consideration for a return to management with Middlesbrough set to look for a replacement for Wolves-bound Rob Edwards.

Dortmund monitoring Sancho return

Borussia Dortmund are "constantly" monitoring Jadon Sancho, with Bild reporting a return to the German club could be on the cards following the winger’s slow start to life on loan at Aston Villa from Manchester United.

Sancho is yet to start a Premier League game for Villa this season, having signed on a season-long loan on deadline day, and with United keen to offload him he could move back to Dortmund.

BILD reports: "This presents a golden opportunity for Borussia Dortmund to swoop in and acquire Sancho, who was already a hot topic of discussion in Dortmund last summer, for a relatively small fee.

"Borussia Dortmund is constantly monitoring Sancho's career and carefully considering the conditions under which a transfer would make sense.

"The dribbler already proved during his last loan spell in Dortmund that he can make an immediate impact at BVB. The technically gifted player played a key role in Dortmund's sensational run to the 2024 Champions League final against Real Madrid [1-2] at Wembley under coach Edin Terzic.

"Sancho knows that BVB will be his last sporting chance to save his career and get it back on track."

Gerrard on Boro shortlist

Liverpool legend and former Rangers and Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is on a three-man shortlist to replace Wolverhampton Wanderers-bound Rob Edwards at Middlesbrough, The Sun reports.

Edwards is set to swap Boro, who are second in the Championship, for the Premier League’s bottom club, and that could see Gerrard return to management in England for the first time since he was sacked by Villa in 2022.

He is joined by ex-Bournemouth and Wolves boss Gary O’Neil and Valencia’s Carlos Corberan on the shortlist.

The Sun adds: "Though chairman Steve Gibson and Boro chiefs are determined to take their time to ensure they get the right man to lead the promotion charge.

"Teessider Gibson held talks with head of football Kieran Scott and other senior figures at Boro over the weekend to start the plan of action.

"And instead of rushing to find an immediate replacement, SunSport understands it will more likely be early next week before an appointment is made.

"The high-flying Championship club are still seething after reluctantly giving Wolves permission to speak with their boss, who only took charge at the Riverside in July."

Could Man Utd sign a striker in January?

An injury to Benjamin Sesko could see Manchester United consider their options in January, with the Mirror listing possible candidates should they be in the market for a striker.

Sesko’s knee injury will see him miss out on playing for Slovenia in the international break, and with United short on strikers one player that could tempt them is Dusan Vlahovic.

The Mirror writes: "The Serbian forward is a free agent at the end of the season with the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Tottenham looking at the opportunity to sign a deal.

"Manchester United have been linked to the 25-year-old in previous windows, and making an early move could see The Red Devils beat competition for his signature.

"Vlahovic is still featuring for Juventus, who are struggling this term, and has scored six goals in 15 matches. The Italian side may be keen to bring in a fee but would be losing a starting striker."
