After a summer of international football at the World Cup, the focus has now switched to club competitions.

Those players who competed in the tournament are returning to their clubs ahead of the new Premier League campaign, when Arsenal will set out to defend their first domestic title in 22 years.

And Villa will be pitched into competitive action before the big kick-off.

Unai Emery’s side will take on UEFA Champions League winners PSG on August 12 in the Super Cup. It is their reward for winning the UEFA Europa League last season.

It will be refereed by Somali official Omar Arta, who was denied entry to the USA for the World Cup.

What is the UEFA Super Cup?

The Super Cup is an annual game organised by UEFA which pits the winners of its two major competitions - the Champions League and the Europa League - against each other.

It was first officially contested as a UEFA competition in 1973, when Ajax beat AC Milan 6-1 over two legs. The two-legged format was dropped in 1997.

Real Madrid are the most successful team in the competition's history, having won the trophy six times.

If the scores are level at the end of 90 minutes, the game will be decided by penalties. No extra time will be played.

PSG are the defending champions, having beaten 2024/25 Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties last year following a 2-2 draw.

How did they get there?

Villa faced Bologna, Feyenoord, Go Ahead Eagles, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Young Boys, Basel, Fenerbahce and Red Bull Salzburg in the group stage of the Europa League.

They finished second in the table, and booked a last-16 tie against Lille. They went on to beat Bologna and Nottingham Forest over two legs to set up a final against Freiburg.

And Emery's side convincingly beat the Bundesliga team 3-0, thanks to goals from Youri Tielemans, Emi Buendia and Morgan Rogers, to end a 30-year trophy drought.

PSG, meanwhile, played Atalanta, Barcelona, Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur, Athletic Bilbao, Sporting CP and Newcastle United in the group stage.

That put them into the play-offs, where they knocked out domestic rivals Monaco to progress to the knockout stage. Wins over Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern put them into a second successive final.

Luis Enrique faced another English team, Arsenal, in Budapest. Arsenal were agonisingly beaten on penalties after a second-half Ousmane Dembele penalty cancelled out an early goal from Kai Havertz.

The final is being staged in Austria at the Red Bull Arena, Salzburg, on Wednesday, August 12, and kicks off at 20:00 UK time.

It is being shown exclusively live on TNT Sports and HBO Max.
