Tuchel on leaving several big names, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harry Maguire, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Morgan Gibbs-White, out of his 26-man squad.
"Very difficult decisions, painful conversations," said the England manager speaking at Wembley.
"Difficult for the players, difficult to explain to the players. What we’re trying to achieve as a team, and we try to nominate a balanced squad.
"If everyone is selected, it was a given that from these 55 players, we have to leave some extraordinary talents, some extraordinary personalities at home.
"Either way, if we picked all those names, some other big five names would have been out, and we would be talking about these names. It comes with the job.
"I like these kinds of decisions, even if it sometimes took weeks and sometimes, months to clarify the decisions. I think they bring clarity.
"At the end, they bring a certain edge that is necessary."

"The level of emotion and what it means to the players to get that call, even players who aren't there for the first time.
"With every phone call to say they were selected, I was more sure we picked the right players."

England slumped to a forgettable 1-0 defeat to Japan in their final Wembley friendly before the World Cup finals this summer.
It was the first time the Three Lions had lost to an Asian side in international football, with Kaoru Mitoma bagging the winner with a lovely finish on 23 minutes from a supreme counter attacking move and Keito Nakamura's excellent assist.
With England captain Harry Kane missing due to injury, England lacked any real momentum in their attacks with a shot from Marcus Rashford saved by the excellent Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki in the second half, and fellow sub Jarrod Bowen knocking wide the closest they came to an equaliser.

FIFA rules state that a player in the final 26-man squad can only be replaced by someone in the provisional squad after May 22 in the event of a serious injury or illness.
This can happen up to 24 hours before England’s World Cup opener against Croatia.
England will then fly to Florida for a pre-World Cup training camp in early June, where they will play against New Zealand on Saturday, June 6, and Costa Rica on Wednesday, June 10.
They will then begin their World Cup campaign a week later against Croatia in Dallas, before taking on Ghana in Boston on Tuesday, June 23 and rounding off the group stage against Panama in New Jersey on Saturday, June 27.

England have friendlies at home to New Zealand and Costa Rica before they begin their campaign against Croatia on June 17, but the preparation will mostly have been done by Thomas Tuchel and his coaching staff.
