The 2026 Wimbledon men’s singles final saw a battle between the top two-ranked players in the draw as reigning champion Jannik Sinner faced second seed Alexander Zverev.

Both players have been in commanding form over the last fortnight at the All England Club to set up a mouthwatering match-up for the grass-court Grand Slam title.

There were some upsets along the way in the men’s draw, most prominently British wildcard Arthur Fery storming all the way to the last four.

But when a star-studded crowd packed into Centre Court on Sunday afternoon, it was to watch the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds face off for the illustrious trophy.

While that may sound like a predictable path, a curious statistic shows how the results being so aligned to the rankings is an outlier rather than the norm.

This was the second year in a row that the top two seeds faced off for the men’s singles final at Wimbledon, after Sinner edged Carlos Alcaraz in 2025 to claim his maiden SW19 crown.

However, according to Opta, this was the first time in 18 years that the top two seeds have reached the final in back-to-back years.

The last time this occurred was in 2008, when Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer in five sets in a match widely regarded as one of the greatest ever played.

It was the second year in a row that the Spanish and Swiss greats locked horns for the title, after Federer won their meeting the year before to claim the fifth of his record eight Wimbledon trophies.

Alcaraz and Sinner’s rivalry has dominated men’s tennis in recent years, with the pair sharing nine consecutive Grand Slam titles between them (five to the Spaniard, four to the Italian) until Zverev broke the trend with his maiden major win at Roland-Garros in June.

However, that was without Alcaraz to contend with; the Spanish sensation missed both the French Open and Wimbledon this year after suffering a wrist injury in April.

Sinner and Alcaraz dominated the field in 2025, with the pair contesting three of the four major finals at Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open.

Those remain the only three major finals in which they have faced off as the tennis world eagerly awaits the Spaniard's return.

This year, Alcaraz defeated fourth seed Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final to claim his seventh major, while Zverev beat 10th seed Flavio Cobolli to claim the title in Paris.

Defending champion Sinner is chasing his fifth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon on Sunday, with the men’s final live on TNT Sports 2 and HBO Max.
