It was a bruising set of UEFA Champions League last-16 first legs for Premier League sides, as Manchester City were dismantled by Real Madrid, Chelsea were swept aside by holders Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal laboured to a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen.

The night before saw Liverpool defeated by Galatasaray and Atletico Madrid run riot against Premier League relegation-battlers Tottenham Hotspur, while Newcastle United claimed a respectable draw against Barcelona.

Bellingham reacts to Valverde heroics

Real Madrid skipper Fede Valverde was the star of the show against City, scoring the first hat-trick of his career as Pep Guardiola's men succumbed to a 3-0 loss against the competition’s perennial winners.

Valverde’s goals came courtesy of his right foot, left foot and a volley, with the Uruguay international stepping up in the absence of the injured Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham.

Indeed, Bellingham’s reaction to Valverde’s third has gone viral in the wake of the game, with TNT Sports cameras catching the England international wide-eyed and mouth agape while watching back his team-mate’s strike.

Neto clashes with ballboy

Pedro Neto apologised after pushing over a young ballboy in stoppage time of Chelsea’s 5-2 loss to PSG.

The ballboy fell onto a chair, with the incident sparking an altercation between PSG and Chelsea players.

Asked about the incident on TNT Sports after the game, Neto said: "I want to apologise to the ball boy. I have already spoken to him.

"We were losing and in the emotion of the game I wanted to get the ball fast and I gave him a little push. I'm not like this. It was in the heat of the moment and I want to apologise.

"I gave him my shirt. I'm really sorry about it - I feel I have to apologise to him.

"My French is not very good, and [Portugal team-mate] Vitinha came over and said to him I was not like this.

"At the end he [the ball boy] laughed and I gave him my shirt and said sorry about 35 times. He could see what had happened and was happy with the situation."

Bodo/Glimt fairytale continues

Giant-killers Bodo/Glimt extended their excellent Champions League form by beating Sporting 3-0 in the first leg of their last-16 tie in Norway.

The Eliteserien outfit, who are making their debut in the competition proper, failed to win any of their opening six league-phase encounters in the Champions League before claiming remarkable victories over Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, and last season's finalists Inter.

Bodo/Glimt are now well on course for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals, where they will face either Arsenal or Bayer Leverkusen.

Courtois heroics

In a week of high-profile goalkeeper howlers in the Champions League, Real Madrid shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois pulled off one of the saves of this year's competition to ensure Los Blancos kept a clean sheet against City.

Alvaro Arbeloa’s side were leading 3-0 when Courtois was forced into a fine save from point-blank range to deny Nico O'Reilly, after Thiago Pitarch was dispossessed inside his own box.

Olise magic

Michael Olise continues to enhance his reputation as one of the world’s best wingers, with the France international playing a part in Bayern Munich’s opening three goals as the Bavarian giants beat Atalanta 6-1 in Bergamo.

In the absence of Harry Kane, Olise shone, playing a part in the build-up to Josip Stanisic’s opener before netting Bayern’s second with a curling effort 10 minutes later.

Olise subsequently fed Serge Gnabry, with the Germany international making it 3-0.

The former Crystal Palace winger netted a second after the break, with Nicolas Jackson and Jamal Musiala rounding off the scoring for Bayern, who are now unbeaten in nine games away from home.
