PSG, meanwhile, are more settled. They are four points clear at the top of Ligue 1, with a game in hand on their nearest rivals Lens, and Luis Enrique has been linked with a contract renewal as the team continue to fare well under his stewardship.

The French team are last season's Champions League winners, and many will consider them favourites to progress against their Premier League opponents, with the return leg taking place next Tuesday, April 14, at Anfield.

"I didn't know that Virgil [van Dijk] said this [the team gave up against City]. I would not agree directly because we still tried to create chances and turn the game around.

"Of course, when the game gets longer, and it is in the 80th minute, and you are 3-0 down, it is mentally difficult to go and go and go.

"We tried to give our best in the game - also when it was 3-0 and 4-0. I think we also had a few chances then. This is not our standard, to lose 4-0 to City, we wanted to go through the round. Next year we want to go further."
