Fans of the beautiful game have been treated to some thrilling UEFA Champions League semi-finals over the years - but Tuesday night’s first leg between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain stepped things up a level.

The two behemoths flexed their attacking muscles in the opening 15 minutes, searching for a chink in their opponent’s armour.

The pressure told in the 17th minute when Luis Diaz was fouled inside the penalty area by William Pacho.

England captain Harry Kane has been tipped for the 2026 Ballon d’Or in recent months, and he showed why as he swept the ball past Matvey Safonov in the PSG goal to give his side the lead.

That brought a thrilling opening 20 minutes to an end, but the two teams were only just getting started.

PSG battle back

Only a fool would have expected PSG to take such an early blow lying down.

The French side responded within eight minutes through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who showed why he has been compared to Diego Maradona over the years as he drove into the box, cut past Josep Stanisic and curled the ball into the bottom right corner.

The French champions weren’t finished there, though.

Things went from bad to worse for Bayern just nine minutes later when Joao Neves latched on to Ousmane Dembele’s delightful corner, nodding the ball into the bottom-right corner.

Just like that, the game had turned on its head, and it was Bayern’s turn to show what they are made of.

Olise shows his class

Step up, Michael Olise.

The France international has been one of the stars of the season, and he produced another moment of magic to level things up at 2-2 with four minutes of the half remaining.

The former Crystal Palace and Reading winger picked up the ball roughly 30 yards from goal, dribbled to the edge of the box in the blink of an eye, and buried a powerful shot into the bottom-left corner before a single PSG defender could lift a finger.

Dembele breaks Bayern hearts

Olise and Kane are two of the frontrunners for the Ballon d’Or, but this year’s winner of the most coveted individual honour in world football had the final say in a pulsating first half.

Dembele felt Alphonso Davies handled the ball inside the box during first-half stoppage time, and VAR agreed with him.

It was a harsh decision that dominated the half-time debate, but Dembele did not care.

He took advantage, beating Manuel Neuer from 12 yards to give PSG the lead at half-time.

PSG go up a gear

PSG were phenomenal in the first half, but after the break, they were out of this world.

They made Bayern look average as they stunned fans by cruising into a 5-2 lead, seemingly killing the tie.

First, Kvaratskhelia scored his second, sweeping Achraf Hakimi’s driven cross into the back of the net.

Dembele completed his double just two minutes later with a wonderful strike off the inside of the post.

Bayern keep the tie alive

At 5-2 down, a lesser team would have crumbled, but Bayern are built differently.

They capped a memorable evening by pulling it back to 5-4 in the space of four minutes, keeping the tie alive and setting the stage for a sensational second leg.

Dayot Upamecano kicked off the comeback, flicking on Joshua Kimmich's free-kick to reduce the deficit to two goals in the 65th minute.

The visitors weren't finished there.

Kane produced a beautiful lofted pass to Diaz in the 68th minute, and the former Liverpool forward complimented it with a peach of touch to tip the ball over an onrushing defender before nudging it past Stanisic.

The finest of margins

Bayern did so well to get back in the tie, but PSG had a chance to give themselves some breathing room in the dying embers of the game.

Substitute Senny Mayulu was put through on goal by Vitinha in the 86th minute, and his thunderbolt was inches away from making it 6-4.

However, it hit the woodwork instead, bringing one of the greatest Champions League matches of all time to an end.
